Cabs a plenty

Re: Cabs a plenty

Oh and what British amp do you have your eye on, if I may ask?

I'll take a wild guess - Orange....?

Re: Cabs a plenty

Nice!!! I am a fan of V30s too..

I was addicted to cabs too....I found for my 2 piece heavier band that a ported high powered 1x15 peavey cab was good enough. Best part is I got it free from my drummer! I love that Peavey thing so much I sold all my other cabs!!! they just didn't compare to the overall fullness and low end the Peavey had and I owned some nice cabs. People look at my rig now and think its a joke (1980s carpet covered Fender Solid State M-80 Head and carpet covered Peavey 1x15) but I don't care because I know the second I turn it on and crank it up it sounds awesome and fills a room!

I hope you like the C90s though...I was not a fan of the one in my Mesa Express 5:50 combo I had... I found it had harsh ice picky highs. Could just be the small combo effect too, I found V30s to be very smooth in the highs and never too ice picky even though others complain about that.

Interesting because I found the opposite with the V30s, at least at first. I have the exact same amp; 5:50+ and actually, as I recall it was a little harsh at first but now the C90 is well broken in and it sounds great in a 1x12 open back cab.
To me the big lesson I learned in all this is to let your speakers break in. I had always played through well-used cabs before and never played new speakers much. I think they all sound kind of harsh at first and you don't identify the real character of the speaker until you've logged some time on them.

That sounds like a cool rig with the peavy and M80. I bet it will also survive just about any abuse you can throw at it too!

Very true... I know that when I have used well worn cabs or combos in the past they always sound smoother and just less stiff or something. I did buy my 5:50 combo new and only had it for a few months before I sold it.. It was a cool amp I should have kept it. Even to connect a cab to it...

And yeah the M80 and Peavey 1x15 setup is awesome for the 2 piece thing because it has that awesome low end thunk with fuzz and an octaver. The speaker in the Peavey is a high powered 15" too so I know I'll never blow it up using a baritone tuning and octaver at once at high volume. The Peavey is built like a tank but the Fender head has cheap plastic knobs and jacks so I will probably have to replace the jacks at least at some point. The HI input jack is already busted...

I have a homebuilt 1x15. It's roughly the same size as an Avatar Traditional 4x12 with the speaker in the center and four round ports (no tubes) in the speaker baffle. And that thing has a roar in the low end that my 4x12s can't pull off. I like it.

Re: Cabs a plenty

Well here it is fellas - the C90s have a much clearer, punchier low end than the V30s, cleans sound great. It is actually louder too (like that needed to happen). It's exactly what I was hoping for - not near as much squishy low end breakup, and mellower highs. Still needs breakin but it pairs perfectly with the 5:50+ head.

Nice!

Try the Rectifier/Jubilee combo yet? :naughty:

Re: Cabs a plenty

Not yet - I did try both cabs together though - MAN it was loud! And very full sounding.

I do have everything I need to run in stereo so I am gonna try that jubilee/recto combination next, when I get some more time.

Re: Cabs a plenty

Part of me has always wanted a Recto but I've never wanted the lame diamond faceplate. That thing is tasteful as crap and the matching cab seals the deal. Please contact me when you plan to sell it :smokin:

Re: Cabs a plenty

Yeah I have never been too hot on the diamond plate either. You can order rectos with jute or other stuff instead, there's an upcharge though.

Re: Cabs a plenty

IIRC, the diamond plate is just glued onto a board, so all a guy has to do is peel it off with a putty knife, put a bevel on the bottom of the board if he wants & glue on some grille cloth.

Re: Cabs a plenty

I was running my Marshall jvm410h full stack and my Peavey 5150 full stack together in stereo one time, and the guy that was outside mowing my yard said that he could hear them over the mower while mowing. I thought that was funny as hell.

Stereo full stacks is something I have never experienced. Hmmmm... maybe I need some more cabs...

Re: Cabs a plenty

Lol this is the worst place to come to ask if you SHOULDN'T buy/keep something. I love it.....
