Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

Doing a David Gilmour Red Strat build from Warmoth parts and it seems the Callaham Strat bridge is pretty popular.

However, it's $165.00 vs the 6-hole vintage Gotoh ones on Warmoth for $44.00.

Can someone tell me what makes the Callaham worth the extra $121.00??

Any increase in tone? Reliability?

If you want the best possible material and build for your vintage 6 screw bridge, the Callaham is the bomb. The metal he uses, combined with his attention to detail make a huge difference, not to mention the trem block he uses....add's tons of sustain and brings the whole thing to life. If you are not going to go with his full bridge system, it's still a big upgrade in parts, but IMO you have to get the whole deal.

When I made my Mary Kay strat, I used his entire hardware package for a strat, tuners, string tree's, jackplate, bridge, saddles....everything. They are nothing short of perfect and work as advertised.

If you read enough of his site, he takes the time to make sure his hardware is vintage correct and precise enough to be as close to original fender specs as humanly possible, while using the most advanced and sophisticated materials and processes.

It's like the difference between a stock Japanese humbucker and a custom shop SD humbucker. Both will do the job, but one is going to look and sound a whole lot better, not to mention last longer.

I've put callaham hardware on every strat I've ever owned, from Hwy 1's to Am Standards. Never once regretted the money I spent.

There we go. Sounds like multiple reasons why Jeff H just cost me an extra $121 on my build (you'll get the bill in the mail Jeff).

;)

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

Send it on bro. I can drop it in the junk mail bin right outside my box!

Seriously, if you take the time to read some of the things on his site, it will sell itself. It really is quality stuff. However, only buy it if you can really afford it. I would not want to see you put yourself in a jam, because the other stuff will work just fine. If you can afford it, I recommend it.

I also recommend buying one of his aluminum pickguard shields. I put one on every strat I've owned, and have had zero noise issues. Didn't have to shield the cavity or anything. Works like a charm.

LOL the body was about $565, neck about $300, DG-20 EMG set is $310... so might as well not skimp where it may count.

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

i would pick out a Roadworn that you have heard first and throw in the EMG pickups in it.

it will probably kill the Warmoth.

plus you hear it before you buy it.

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

heck, get a used one and really save some cash

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

I have a Callaham tele bridge, and I didn't think it was worth it at first, until I played my guitar with one. But if I was doing a build, and could fit it in the budget, I certainly would buy Callaham!

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

I wouldn't mind a roadworn strat, but Warmoth is how I decided to do my first build.

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

On my 1995 Am Std Stratocaster, the Callaham saddles and sustain block have made an improvement to its unamplified sound. Unfortunately, because I changed both items at the same time, I cannot vouch for how much difference each alteration has contributed.

If we remove our rose-tinted spectacles for a moment, there is no denying that Leo Fender's original, stamped steel bridge is the simplest, cheapest POS imaginable BUT it serves its purpose and it is part of the sound that we all know and love (or loathe).

If you have a free choice of which Callaham bridge assembly to install, I suggest the Deluxe variant with the unthreaded "push-in" arm.

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

The Callaham Strat bridge is tops.

I use one in my Strat and at this point can't imagine using anything else.

They are very well made, they sound great, the trem arm stays TIGHT and you'll never break the arm off...like I have done several times with lesser set ups!

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

Gotoh GE101TS is a much less expensive alternative. Probably not as good as the Callaham, but I hear good buzz about it.

The Fender Vintage trem is OK with a little TLC. Suhr uses it for the 6 screw bridge option. Very slighty open up the mount holes (we're talking a couple of thousandths) re-bevel the knife edges (skip if you don't have a drill press). Remove the powder coating from the block and bottom of the bridge plate, use teflon tape on the arm.

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

Callaham block with Titanium saddles is the real bomb!

The plate does not matter as much as Callaham and ‘OTHERS' would hype you to believe.

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

Just replacing the stock block on my partsocaster with his MIM block made a remarkable difference, can't imagine how good the entire bridge is.

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

damn good bridges but not cheap. love their blocks and saddles

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

Great bridge/system. I LOVE the lack of "arm wobble"! Put a little liquid teflon on it the other day....wow, sooo smoooooooooooth.

this might be the ONLY instance where its better to be a lefty. the vintage fender bridge MSRP's about $100 so the callaham is only like $30 more for the lefty crowd.

@$30 more its a no brainer...

I keep seeing ghosts all over the forum suddenly.....I think my computer may be haunted.

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

I can't see skimping $100 that may negatively effect the Gilmour Red Strat build that I'm doing, especially when I'm spending so much on everything else. It too is a no-brainer, I just needed the reassurance from my Seymour Duncan Forum-brethren that it's not a waste.

The decision has already been made, and if I didn't have to order my 3yr old son's b-day present this week, I'd order it up tomorrow. When I go, my son is going to have some very nice toys... :)

Re: Callaham Strat bridges worth the extra hundred plus bucks?

Always glad to help empty the wallet of a forum bro, however, I am glad to see that you are taking care of your son first. I always did that with my daughter too. It may have cost me a few meals, grownup toys or other things along the way, but putting her first has been the best thing I have ever done with my life.
