Calling all cab/spkr Experts

I could use your advice and feedback. I'm currently running a bogner shiva EL84 head thru a Marshall 1936 Cab 2x12.

What sonic differences could I expect if I went to a bogner 2x12 cab with v30s? (darker, brighter, more lows, less lows, more aggressive, less)?

Reason I ask, I'm in a new band and not exactly cutting thru the mix for some reason. Plus I need a slightly more modern/aggressive tone. Tryin to do this without having to buy another amp. :banghead:

Also - any recommondations would be helpful as well.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Re: Calling all cab/spkr Experts

The Vintage 30 is more or less the tonal opposite of the G12T75's that are in your Marshall cab. To my ear, the 75's sound scooped and sterile. The V30 is a lot warmer, but has a bit less low end response and a bit of a upper mid spike.

I've always thought that a 2x12 with a V30 and a 75 would be a great cab for a high gain amp.

ratherdashing many thanks! Would or could you say that the V30s may help cut a little more with that type of mid spike? Is it that type of ice pick upper mid or a "good" one to your ears?

Well, it depends on a lot of things: the age of the speaker, the cab it's in, how broken in the speaker is. I find that in the right cab, a broken-in V30 is a very complex-sounding, balanced speaker, and if your amp matches it well it will put you in a nice place in the mix (assuming you're not competing with another guitarist that sounds similar). I've played my amp (Stiletto Ace) through V30-equipped cabs that sounded godly, and others that had a brutal beamy ice pick.

the v30 is also more sensitive than the 75 so on top of the fact that you will have a punchier tone, youll actually have more volume too.

The G12t-75 is a nice speaker but it does not have the mids of other popular speakers. Greenbacks are great for distorted mids but I prefer them in a 412. The G12h is a nice speaker with more of a balanced tone than the greenback; it has more bottom end and less midrange focus.

Weber ceramic blue dogs are sorta like a cross between a greenback and a g12h. I still prefer greenbacks in a 412.

Recently I discovered the celestion Classic Lead 80 and I am very impressed. It has nice midrange response but with more of a full range sound than the greenback. It sounds very impressive in a 1x12. I'd love to try out of pair of these in a 212.

Have not tried them myself, but the celestion g12 65 is getting a lot of good review these days. That will be my next venture, pretty sure.

I had the same cab, those g12-75's do you no favors in trying to cut through the mix, they are totally scooped like someone else said. I myself am a big fan of vintage 30's, nice and punchy, tons of mids to cut through, and they sound way louder than the 75's due to this

Re: Calling all cab/spkr Experts

My friend has a bogner extasy and a matching cab 4 x V30. With a strat the sound is very bassy, tons of lows and high mids. Clean is very nice and cutting, lead has a singing quality. With the same amp on marshall g12m cab there are less lows, more warm mids and less loudness.
I don't care for T-75.

Re: Calling all cab/spkr Experts

V30 is the most aggressive speaker-this is not a secret. It is full of loudness- bass, high mids and presence, but for bogner shiva a would suggest g12H. 100db speaker just like V30 - these are the loudest speakers from celestion.
Another solution could be v30+g12h. Favorite combo for a lot of people in 212 and 412.
G12H- Check it out!
