Calling Dangly

I have Mustang gas. But I need to know, how well does the Mustang handle LOW tunings(ex: A-E-A-D-G-B) and lots of fuzz. Please oh mighty master of offset-ery, teach me.

Re: Calling Dangly

Yo... Appreciate the inquiry :D If I was going to do that I'd use a standard set of 11s (or higher), throw away the high E, and buy a seperate thick guage string for your lowest string... But hey. You're probably already doing that...

Just remember that Mustangs are more well suited to thick ass strings, so don't be afraid to go thick, and DEFINITELY don't use anything less than 11s... 11s on a Mustang feel like 10s on say a Strat, but not too differently from a Les Paul...

I do drop D on occasion with the Mustang... it's more well suited to drop tunings than saya Jag, but not quite as tight as say a Les Paul, and going down quite a bit will definitely get things slinkier than a Strat. All in all it'll work, but it might take some experimenting...

That said I like the way Mustangs sound downtuned and fuzzy... Lots of fuzz... I think Mustangs excel at this :D

They sound in general heavier than strats, and are more suited to heavy distortion and heavy music (IMO)... If you're going to drop it I'd recommend brighter (A5) pickups though.

how bout that :D

As far as string gauge, I will probably be using 12's with some custom gauges thrown in. I am currently using a Les Paul scale guitar in the mentioned tuning.

And how about that? I'd say you just at least made my gas for a Mustang three times worse.

EDIT: What about tuning issues with the trem? Arent early Duo-Sonics just a Mustang with a hardtail? That could be nice.

And damn I wish Offset Guitar had a Mustang dressing room.

...there shouldn't be trem issues as long as the nut is well cut and the bridge is allowed to rock... especially if the trem is not set for floating.

If you just don't want to deal with it, you can always get a duo sonic... but I figure you might as well get a Stang, the trem is there in case you want to use it, and there aren't any intonation issues ;) But they stay tune as least as well as a strat bridge...

Fair enough. I was sort of set on a Mustang anyways. Just having the trem wont kill me. So. Much. Gas. I need to get another job....

EDIT: I wish I had money. The 65' RI is onsale at Musicians Enemy right now for 699.

...ok, there's no contest as to what I would do in retrospect now (as my Mustang turned out GREAT... especially now that I've FINALLY set it up :laugh2:)

But damn... that's only 100 bucks more than it took me to cruise ebay night and day for 6 months scrounging up parts.

You should record some clips of your Stang some time Dangly.

Considering that was done through a 5$ mic and Windows sound recorder it sounds pretty damn good. Despite the crappy recording I love the way those single coils are so damn gutsy.

$4 at RadioShack will allow you to plug directly into your computer (1/4"-to-1/8" adapter) or from a PA/amp, and there is a shareware program that I use a lot called WavePad that's really good... I feel like these could help you out. Here's the WavePad link.

Re: Calling Dangly

You might consider the Baritone Jaguar, or a super yummy Bass-6. They're all family. http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0259300306

Baritones sound beautiful clean, but to me they will never replace the sound of a down-tuned guitars. Two completely different beasts sound wise. Also, they dont make a baritone Mustang.

This isnt to say the Bass VI and Bari Jag dont rule, because they do. But they are just not what I am after.
