Re: Calling Stony. (stonabus)
you bet, here goes my first review,
i recently purchased a set of lipstick tube pickups from the seymour duncan line. these are danelectro pups that are sized for a strat. i wanted to make my own version of srv's
"charley"(its the white one with dano pups....
i dont want to make this a guitar review, but i will tell you
what i put the pups in. i put them in a solid alder body and the neck is one piece maple. the trem is blocked. i used a .02 cap.
now for the pups, these pups are not hum canceling by themselves. the middle pup is reverse wound/reverse polarity, so in the 2 and four positions they will (cancel hum). these are also fairly weak pups as far as output goes.
the neck pup is warm and creamy the highs are there but, not as much as most neck pups, still the highs are not so vacant that the pup becomes "muddy". if you go by the "
tone chart" you will be mislead on this one... a very nice pup for the neck. its good for mellow, bluesey noodling, and some soloing.
the middle pup is a touch louder with more highs. really close to a vintage strat middle pup. a bit more glass and all the "quack" you want. in combo with the neck pup is very warm and creamy, like the neck but hum canceling and a bit louder/brighter.
now for the bridge pup... wow. tele-ish, but still a strat. bright but not icepicky. very surfy, but still useable for blues and jazz, not to mention rock. higher output (duh) and good on attack dynamics. add some 'verb and bust out some "misrelou" or "walk dont run". kill the verb and you got a good tone for "insert your fave blues song here". in combination with the neck, you have a good skynard tone with no hum. some here may consider the bridge pup too bright. it is very well balanced compared to some of the icepick pups that i have heard.
i cant remember the guys name, but he has a zappa avatar, he said these pups dont sound good with distortion. at first he was right. with my setup still dialed in to my other strat, the lipstick tubes didnt sound good distorted. they were real thin and nasal. but after a few tweaks on the amp and pedals, they sound a bit better. i wouldnt recommend these to someone who plays with distortion exclusively. but would definately recommend them to someone who plays exclusively clean. if you are in the middle ground as far as overdrive, these are still way good. for me, on these pups, i prefer tube amp overdrive rather than pedal distortion.
i was not disappointed at all with this purchase...
i went with standard strat wiring on this guitar.
