Can a hollow body rock?

Re: Can a hollow body rock?

Ted was also the first thing that popped into my mind! We're dating ourselves, but man that guy rocked. During the late '70's cb radio craze my handle was Gonzo-sounds kinda stupid now................

Wasn't "Cliffs of Dover" recorded on a ES-335?

It's entirely possible, because Eric has been a long term afficianado of 335s, but to my ears it sounds like a Strat. And everytime I've seen him play that tune, he's playing a Strat.

Re: Can a hollow body rock?

Alex Lifeson from Rush used different semi-hollow bodied guitars in addition to his solid-bodied guitars throughout his career:

Re: Can a hollow body rock?

There's a really sweet mid-range sound that I get out of my semi-hollow ES-335 clone that I havn't heard from anything else. It can definately do the whole classic rock thing, ska thing, punk, reggae, blues, and pretty much anything that I throw at it. If you're really addicted to upper register shredding you may have problems reaching the 21st and 22nd frets (at least I do) because the design of the 335 just doesn't seem quite cut away enough, but other than that I love this guitar.

Re: Can a hollow body rock?

Being nit-picky, IIRC there's sort of a spectrum from solid body to full hollow body:
Solid
Solid with "chambers"
Semi-hollow with center block attached to front & back
Semi-hollow with floating back or front, but not both
Hollow with no center block

Of course, I don't know nothin' about semi-hollow guitars

Re: Can a hollow body rock?

Thanks for the encouragement...and yes, Ted does rock. I went by Guitar Center last night and tried out an Ibanez Artcore and compared it to my Carvin DC127. WOW!! Even the low-priced Artcore blew me away! Just what I was looking for. Wonderful variety of cleans and rich overdriven tones. Perfect compliment to my strat. I grabbed a like-new sunburst Artstar (Pre-Artcore, Super 58 pickups, 2002) w/ case last night off ebay!

The Artstars (Korean) were made before the Artcore series (Chinese). They sold for $600 plus case, so I'm happy with the deal.

Thanks again!

Tom Morello rocks with an Ibanez Hollow Body, Warren Haynes Rocks with a Gibson 335 and Aerosmith with a variety of hollow bodied Gretch's, Gibson, etc. It really depends on the Amp and pickups you're using.

True on all counts, not to mention Alvin Lee's playing with Ten Years After (especially live), about as rocked up as you can hope for with an ES-335 and a Marshall.

Good 'ol Rick Derringer rocked out with Edgar Witner's White Trash with a similar setup too:

Looks like you got a great deal! Isn't it great to get it at the starting bid? Congrats and enjoy!

The guitar player for Nickleback (insert jokes here) uses Gibson ES-135 LE's live and they play with some pretty high gain. I've got one of those as well and enjoy rocking out on it too.

He also uses a PRS Hollowbody live, that thing is sweeeet :saeek: If done within reason, hollowbody guitars can withstand high gain (just make sure you aren't facing the amp at high volumes.... :blackeye: )

Robben Ford is amazing and his tone mostly consists of ES-335s (as mentioned earlier) and Bakers.

Re: Can a hollow body rock?

I do my best to not think of Ted Nugent, he needs a good smack round the face.

Theres a whole bunch of great hard rockin dudes who use semis. Black Rebel Motorcucle Club use them exclusivley for instance. John Frusciante uses a Gretch White Falcon for a whole host of chili peppers numbers. Troy Van Leewuen or whatever his name is, from QOTSA uses them alot, and thats a heavy band.
