Can anyone back up what this guy said on the gear page - link to thread inside.

I posted on the gear page to ask the rest of the komet nuts what they thought about me getting a 212 g12h30 cab for using with my komet 60, and one guy (who appears to be an amp tech) said that i could fry the speakers because although the amp is rated at 60 watts, when cranked it could be pushing out much more. He talks about it in his post on my thread and here is a link to the thread:

Just wondering if anyone can confirm or deny this, and also if you think i would be safe running a 212 g12h30 cab with my komet 60...?

There is the possiblity of what he says happening.

You very well could run the amp through the combo forever without an issue, or you could turn it up the first time and it may go pop.

I like my speakers to have a little more wattage. But, the truth is, I don't play with the volume dimmed.

I suppose there would be less chance of hurting the speakers if i used my hotplate with the komet, even to only shave off 4 to 8 db?

YA,

The key would be to ask everyone if they have experience with G13H30 going over 30 watts.

You could also ask Celestion.

You could also try another manufacturer's speakers with more handling ability, that are modelled after the G12H30.

I always thought that one had to look at the RMS rating of a speaker as well.Because wattage can vary.DRIVE can make wattage increase.I could be wrong ?

+1 I'd look into the Eminence Wizard, or one of Ted Weber's G12H30 equivalents.

yeah go with eminence wizards. basically 75 watt g12h30's

if you fry one i'll be incredibly, incredibly shocked

i got all my friends using eminence now after they killed their celestions, they have nothing but good things to say

hah one of them had a v30 loaded cab, and one of them CAUGHT ON FIRE. Burned a big hole in his grill cloth, it was hillarious

now he's using a combo of governors & swamp thangs, couldn't be happier

Can and will are two different things. The Komet is a loud and wide open sounding amp, so if you dimed it, I guess you could blow a speaker.

Here's the thing though. When you start increasing the volume, there's a point where you can tell the speakers are being pushed too hard, and that point will probably be louder than you need. Those 2 speakers can theoretically handle 120 watts, so the 60 watt Komet should be fine.
You'll know if you're abusing them, because you'll hear them distort to the point of buckling first.

I just got an email back from Mike Kennedy himself and he said that he knows plenty of people that run 212 cabs with g12h30s with their komet 60's, and its only a worry if i run it on 12 (im assuming thats dimed plus a boost pedal of some sort).

I think 12 was a retort lol

Why not just contact Komet and ask them. They should know. I doubt there are many techs that have had their hands inside a Komet and probably don't didley about the workings of that kind of an amp.

Re: Can anyone back up what this guy said on the gear page - link to thread inside.

I think the wattage ratings are conservative on speakers. Look at how many AC30's were out there with 2 - 15 watt Alnico Blues... How many of those are blown? How many are still pumping out the tone?

Personally, I'd load it up with Mojo G12H30's and save some money... but you'd have to get them shipped Down Under.

+1. Watt ratings on speakers are conservative. Every guitar amplifier speaker can handle more than what it's rated for. It's a good idea not to stretch the rating too much and, like Gearjoneser said, you'll know when you're at that threshold and the speakers can't keep up. I'm assuming you won't be diming the amp, so I wouldn't worry about a thing.
