I don't know what the European equivalent is, but I just use plain old copper 14 gauge speaker wire. It's what I used when I was running 240 watts per speaker when I had subwoofers in my car back when I was a teenager.

I use just red/black 16 gauge wire you can find at any electronics store. I think the factory stuff is 14 (or smaller), so 16 is plenty overkill.

If you want authentic Marshall sound, use the originals. But yes, I have rewired most of mine. On ebay, theres a guy that sells a real neat thicker gauge 4x12 complete harness for less than 30 bucks.

16 gauge zip cord from Home Depot.

16 is smaller than 14.

16 should be fine, though.

I doubt they are poor...they are probably perfectly fine.
Resistance in a Thousand Feet of 18 Gauge wire is 16.5 Ohms.
You will never know if your cab has 20 Gauge... or 12.

Yeah, I've never understood the importance of changing wire in cabs or even guitars, for that matter. With a low level of current going through any of it, all it needs is an electrical connection, and the wire gauge means almost nothing.

I've had amps/cabs of all gauge, and Marshall cabs come with cheap skinny 20 gauge wire...I think. Anytime I've rewired a guitar, I've never heard a difference with a wiring change.....only a potentiometer or cap change.

I did one of mine with Monster Speaker Cable--the zip cord type. It's about 10 gauge--huge. Not sure it made any audible difference.

I did mine with AudioQuest Type 4, just because I had it sitting around.

Anyone tried just buying 10 ft of Romex and using that? It's plenty thick (must be 10 gauge), and cheap as hell.

I figure it would work great if you can solder ends to it.

Re: Can anyone recommend me good cables for rewiring my Marshall 1960 A Cabinet?

I don't know Romex, but you'll want multi-stranded copper wire, not just one piece of solid copper.

I just use lamp cord.. the long crap you get at home depot for lamps. Works great.

Re: Can anyone recommend me good cables for rewiring my Marshall 1960 A Cabinet?

Yeah, but lamp cord will not get you the pretty factory harness look. :D

And that's the catch. Heavy gauge wire can be more difficult to work with, which can lead to poor solder joints. Better to use something appropriate for the job (14 - 16 ga. is perfectly fine for most applications) than to go overkill and have bad joints.

Re: Can anyone recommend me good cables for rewiring my Marshall 1960 A Cabinet?

I thought that the better higher gauge wires between speakers in this 4x12 angled cab will improve some better low end.. so this isn't true?
