Re: can anyone tell me about Fender 70's large headstock necks??

It should fit your MIM just fine. The tone changes (using for example two maple/rw necks, one small headstock, one large) would be noticeable, I would say, it sounds really close to putting one of those GT Fatfingers on the headstock. I like the look of 'em on some guitars (black, tortise guard, rw neck, big headstock).

beandip, thanks for your advice bro. are there other ways of buying a 70s neck instead of going ebay or warmoth?

considering it's actually a modern fender neck with a 70s style headstock, there should be no issues at all. I have a 76 strat, and the neck is a little narrower in the hand than other fender necks, but I don't know if the heel area is any narrower than other fender necks. The problem with 70s fenders was sloppily routed neck pockets and poorly drilled three bolt neck joints, not the necks themselves. You should see the neck joint on my '76. It's been filled, but you can see the original rout and it's comically wide compared to the neck.

Hey, if you're improving from a MIM, you get 22 frets! lol...

Allparts sells high quality necks at low prices. You dont get the 'customization' of Warmoth or USACG, but if you're wanting a standard rw/maple thing, then you could do that. Or just grab a cheapy Squire off of eBay.

The extra mass on the Headstock should slightly improve sustain.

Re: can anyone tell me about Fender 70's large headstock necks??

As Hot Grits said, the real 70's becks are mostly sloppy made necks with poor pocketfitting, basicly most 70's Fenders are close to hopeless.
Lots of spareparts necks to buy, so it is just a matter of digging in and get some info, http://www.usacustomguitars.com/

Mighty mite, hmm well you'll probally find something.

Re: can anyone tell me about Fender 70's large headstock necks??

I have a 1978 3 bolt large headstock. I made it a 5 bolt because it always shifted on me. Also tried re-radiusing it to 10" mysef and then refretted it myself. Came out O.K., but I'm probably going to replace it eventually with a Warmoth. Explorer headstock!

Re: can anyone tell me about Fender 70's large headstock necks??

Guys, I hate to be Mr Paranoid...but I don't remember any of the USA Fender line (except for custom shop or artist signature) that were large headstock made in 2003. Now, I could be crazy and I'm not as up on the entire line as I used to be...I'm not making any accusations...I just can't recall seeing this made in the USA, at least not in 2003. Do any of you know for sure?

Some advice? Just beware of E-bay...At least if you do buy from Warmoth, etc, you know what you're getting and who you're getting it from.

Fender came out with a Highway 1 with the large Headstock recently, but I don't know if it was in 2003. I know they have them for the 2004 model year.

Also, the Delonge strat has a 70s style headstock and a rw fretboard.

Now, that could be the case...Didn't know they were doing that! It looks as though the 2003 neck the guy is selling is also from a Highway, as it has 2 string trees...Thanks for the info 59paul!

Is it American made?

I think 59paul figured this one out for me...I didn't want to accuse the seller of anything, because I wasn't sure about the headstock. I'm just trying to be careful and maybe help the guy out if he was thinking of buying one of these. :)

Thanks guys!

Yes, it's an American neck. If I took the neck off of my Highway 1 ( yes, I have one, and I Love it !!! ) and I took the neck off of one of my newer American Strats, I would be hard pressed to tell them apart, except for the serial #'s. ...........:)
