Can BB Pros do heavy rock? Opinions?

Just looking at some options and opinions from others. Got a Les Paul with BB pros. The tones I'm after right now are the heavy ones, love Tony Iommi's tone on the Heaven and Hell tour. Like Doug Alderich's tone with Dio. Really dig the 80's metal tone. I have a Mesa Boogie with a couple of 1/12 cabs. I have a Dimarzio Super Distortion kicking around as well as VHPAF. Don't want to waste money. Opinions on what I should go with.
Thanks

Well, they should be good. Although that mesa won't sound like a Marshall.

Re: Can BB Pros do heavy rock? Opinions?

bb's will do metal fine...you've got the amp.

Re: Can BB Pros do heavy rock? Opinions?

Yeah I realize the Marshall is important and would still like to get one maybe the Vintage modern or a good old DSL 50. But I was really impressed with the F-30 Boogie head and Cabs. Very versatile clean to drive. The head and cabs sound huge and full. I also really dig the workmanship of Mesa stuff.
Do you guys find super distortions in Les Pauls to be just too much? Overbearing?

Re: Can BB Pros do heavy rock? Opinions?

Well the SuperD is kinda like a classic in a Les Paul....

I don't know about the recent stuff, but for Tony's classic Black Sabbath stuff, I get an almost perfect match with the 490R/498T in my SG Std. I don't think these pickups are as popular in LP's, however.

Re: Can BB Pros do heavy rock? Opinions?

I'm watching this thread with interest....I've got a Lester with a Pearly Gates set...and frankly, the lack of amp push I get out of the guitar leaves me wanting a pube hair more out of the bridge....the reason I say this, given the fact pattern here....is that Im specifically going for Doug Aldrich/Whitesnake'esque tones....

Now, having said that, I get closer to such tones with the Custom Custom in my super strat...and I'm *very* much considering shelving the PGb for a CC instead.....

...something worth mentioning is that prior to going to Suhr's pickups, Aldrich used a CC in his favorite Lester.

not to digress, but a problem i had with the BBs was not the output for metal, but rather its texture..i wanted something a bit compressed and saggy...

since i'm getting a CC in my gibson les paul std next week, i'll let you know how it goes..

i'm also a huge whitesnake/aldrich fan..after watching that live in the still of the night dvd..great les paul+marshall tone..

aldrich did use a CC during the live in the still of the night dvd i'm pretty sure...as to which guitar i'm not sure, though i predict it was the lemon-burst les paul...

Re: Can BB Pros do heavy rock? Opinions?

Benji, afaik, you are correct...in that video, the lemonburst paul (the one he had the neck shaved down and Page carve his initials in the back with a fork) has a CC in the bridge.

Not sure what's in the neck on that guitar. I also dont know whats in the LP Custom in that video.....but definitely, from what I remember reading on Doug's board, that Lemon LP had a CC in the bridge....it probably has a Suhr DA pickup in it now...

yup that lemon burst sounds more spongier than others...pretty evident when he's doing his solo....

i don't know about doug's personal preference, but that particular LP sounded the best...

i currently have a seth bridge in the neck which i love..so much fat..

gearjoneser and a few others have mentioned that the CC is like a beefed up seth...

we'll see if it's good enough to replace the 59...:nervous:

Re: Can BB Pros do heavy rock? Opinions?

The CC is sounding more and more interesting. Does it lack bottom? The tone chart seems to say so? I have the Dio Holy Diver Live with Doug. Excellent playing by the way. He plays a black strat/maple neck and a Lester, gets great tone out of both. Looks like he's playing both Marshall DSL and 900's!!! From what I could tell in the DVD. I read in an interview that he put an old Allan Holdsworth model in the bridge of his strat. Said it sounded nice and fat. But his Lester tone kicks major ass! If that is a CC, I like!!

i'm glad you didn't view my post as hijacking...:nervous:

just suggesting that their maybe other options..

Bottom and low end are often terms confused with words like fat and thickness..sure the eq of the CC shows that it has less bottom compared to mids and highs...

but the nature of the CC is that it has very big mids, making it sound huge...

and Doug's tone on live in the still of the night sure isn't deprived of low end; it's very dense and fills up a wall of sound

if you don't have one, pick up the dvd and pay attention to the lemonburst..

i will try one in my gibson very soon...

Re: Can BB Pros do heavy rock? Opinions?

Apparently Suhr pups are made by DiMarzio

I have a couple of clips of the BB pros doing 80s hard rock stuff on my soundclick. Work well with the right settings a decent piece of wood in the guitar.

www.soundclick.com/litrtrdnck

"lights out" is one, and there's a couple more clips of my old Faded Les Paul as well (check the descriptions)

crappy recordings but you'll get the jist of things.

Re: Can BB Pros do heavy rock? Opinions?

Let me know how the CC sounds in your Les Paul!

I bought a Flying V about a year ago and experimented with a few different pup combinations and I fell in love with the SH-11. I loved it so much that I took the JB out of my Les Paul Classic and replaced it with a CustomCustom. I never thought that would happen!
