Can I get some advice on speaker mixing??? Celestion content!

Hey all!

I have an older THD 212 cabinet that came stock with the original Longhorns which are tweaked Clestion CL80s. These are the Celestion version....not the new Eminence version.

I want something different. I was thinking of finding a speaker to mix with one of my Celestion THD Longhorn (CL-80s). I thought about ordering the new THD Longhorn and Vintage. I also thought of finding an old Celestion V30....but I am guessing it will be too aggressive? I say that because THD speakers are mellow versions of the stock variants.

Maybe some Webers? Eminence speakers? Others?

My Bogner cabinet has the WGS ET65/Vet30.

I use a Bogner EL34 20th Anniversary Shiva, and soon a Mesa Mark V. I also might have a Rectifier 212 with V30s...
Most of my originals are rock and hard rock. However we started a cover band that does everything from 70s to current rock and hard rock. I tend to find ultra clean speakers too hard to play, not forgiving enough. Where as speakers with thicker mids easier to play, especially leads.

So I want this THD cab to be a bit different but still to compliment my amps. :)

Thanks!

The mixing I was considering is this......

In my THD 212....10 year old Classic Lead 80 and 8 year old Vintage 30...both English made.

In my Mesa Boogie Rectifier vert 212 was thinking either G12K-100/V30 or CL80/V30 mix.

The sensitivity is similar on these speakers so they should go OK!:1:

I've never tried it myself but I do hear of the V30/CL80 combo being used quite regularly and was 1 suggested to me when I bought my new 2x12 cab.

In my 212 I use a Celestion Vintage 30 and a Celestion Classic Lead 80. Works for me.

Per Avatarspeakers.com

I personally use a Vintage 30 and Classic Lead 80 for a half clean/half crunch sound.

It has been our experience that some of the favorite speaker combinations are two 'industry standard' Celestion Vintage 30's for Superb high power tone and for the widest variety of music styles and for a great deal of presence to really cut through the mix in a 120 watt cab.

One Celestion Vintage 30 and one G12H30 for a slightly deeper, warmer sounding tone as a 60 watt cab, or two Celestion G12H30s for a real rich, sweeter overdrive tone at 60 watts.

The Celestion Greenback will give this cabinet early cone break up for classic warm low wattage tone at 25 watts each.

The Celestion G12T75 (used in many Marshall cabinets) have lots of crunch, big bass, scooped mids and sizzling highs at 75 watts each.

For fantastic, natural sounding high power clean tones, the 80 watt Celestion Classic Lead 80s are the Celestions that most faithfully reproduce your signal rather than to add any color or character to your tone. Classic lead 80's are great for modeling type amps or situations where you want neutral clean clear reproduction.

For the lower powered high end boutique tube amps, two Celestion Alnico Blue's have the most wonderful chime and creamy midrange to them in a 30 watt cab or consider the mix of one Alnico BLUE and one G12H30 for half chime and half warm overdrive. A lot of guys that have boutique amps really like the Celestion Blue/G12H30 combination.

Our Hellatones are also great because the Hellatone 30 is a slightly broken in Celestion G12H30 and the Hellatone 60 is a slightly broken in Celestion Vintage 30.

For the ultimate in vintage alnico chimey tone, the new 50 watt Celestion Alnico Golds have the same wonderful chime as the lower powered Blues but are rated at 50 watts each speaker rather than 15 watts.

I have a Bogner Shiva 90 watt head and Mesa Mark V.

In that case you can't use Greenbacks, or H30s, Alnico Blues, and so forth, unless you use higher power handling Emi clones or something in 2x12. But another thing is that part of the response of vintage speakers is them being a bit over matched, which you loose to some extent with higher power handling. A pair of Golds may be workable if you like Alnicos, but you still may be pushing the limits. Mixing in a V30 with CL80 may be a good idea. The V30 will add some vintage color and the CL80 will possibly off set some of the what some find overbearing properties of the V30. Another mix is the V30 and the G12T75. Im not a fan of the G12T75, but the V30 and the G12T75 off set each other well.

I would LOVE to try the G12H30....but just can't with a 90 watt Bogner head. :(

I used a G12-65 for my warm, deep tones......so it satisfies that in me.

My THD gets an old V30/Cl80 mix, my Vertical Rectifier 212 the same.

My Marshall 412 will get Greenbacks or maybe mixed with G12H30s.
