Can I have some pedal placement advice?

Hi all! Was wondering if I could get some advice on where to place some pedals. Mostly the compressor and OD pedal....maybe the wah.

The problem is, the wah is first on my board and seems to work best there because of its size....it makes sense to be forst and I hear little difference as to whether it comes before or after the tuner, for example.

I use the compressor to get infinite sustain for some lead lines and for osme clean tones. The wah would rarely be used while the compressor is on and I might only use the wah and OD pedal a few times but rarely.

Amps are Bogner Shiva 20th EL34 and Mesa Mark V.

Guitar > Wah > Tuner > Comp > Phaser > OD > Noise Gate > Amp. Loop Send > Chorus/Flanger > Delay > Reverb > Loop Return.

Re: Can I have some pedal placement advice?

Looks like a reasonable layout, some situations might call for OD before wah or phaser after OD (OD last tends to blur the phaser a little, which you may prefer, but OD last ensures the phaser doesn't eat any of it's gain).

Physical layout doesn't have to match signal route, though. If you want, can always get some different length patch cords and route things differently while keeping the pedals in their optimium positions for stomping.

My phaser is mostly used with the amp's gain and I never had an issue having it in front of the amp to be honest. I use a 1974 MXR phase 90 that I guess was always intended to go in front of the amp, LOL. I love how it sounds on lead and for clean is fine where it is. If I put everything in the loop....I might go TC Electronic Nova.

My OD pedal is almost never used with the phaser. I rarely use the OD pedal but it kills (Lovepedal Kalamazoo) for Hendrix and Zeppelin. In that case I use my compressor for a lead boost because it has volume and gain(Grit), I use the Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone pedal. This is a comp with a grit knob! I use it in front of my OD but I could have it after?

Re: Can I have some pedal placement advice?

You did this:

Guitar > Wah > Tuner > Comp > Phaser > OD > Noise Gate > Amp. Loop Send > Chorus/Flanger > Delay > Reverb > Loop Return.

I would say a more standard approach might be:

Guitar Tuner > Wah > Comp > OD > Noise Gate > Amp. Loop Send > Phaser > Chorus/Flanger > Delay > Reverb > Loop Return.

Bottom line - whatever works best for the sound you want - but in general:

Envelope/tracking stuff first; Pitchshift, (for tracking a clean signal), Wahs compressor.

Dirt next, in whatever order you dig - especially if multiple usedthen a noise gate.

Then - anything swirly or time based in the loop if you have one.

There really is no official correct answer - but I'd almost always go: Wah, Comp, Dirt, EQ, Noise, chorus, Delay, Reverb.

Re: Can I have some pedal placement advice?

My wah is a Dunlop 95Q and is buffered bypass. It works just as well as the first pedal in the line so I keep it that way. I think a Phase 90 belongs in front of the amp.

Re: Can I have some pedal placement advice?

The phaser is a time based effect right? So I would run it in the loop.

I think it looks good other then the phaser in the loop. Its worth a try

Re: Can I have some pedal placement advice?

I'll try it in the loop....but it is my experience than Phase 90s are better in front! :)

Re: Can I have some pedal placement advice?

You might get some good results by moving your noise gate to after the tuner (depending on how noisy your OD and compressor are). That way your gain pedals aren't amplifying any minute amount of hum that's coming from your pickups.

I've been getting more use out of my phaser in front of the amp, so I see what you're going for with it in that position.

Hi, the Gate is the last thing before the amp.....well after the tuner.

OD is Lovepedal Kalamazoo and Comp is Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone....both fairly quiet.

Re: Can I have some pedal placement advice?

Phaser's one of those oddball modulation pedals that sounds good out front or in the loop, it just depends on your preference. In the loop, the wet signal will be cleaner (mostly on phasers with a mix/blend control, it doesn't apply as much to the OP, but it's still important to remember). Out front, all of the wet signal will get distorted by the amp/pedal.

I run my phaser in the "loop" (my amp predates effects loops, but I run it after my dirt section, which is basically what a loop lets you do) of my pedalboard, but it's a special case. I have an Infanem Faye Sing, which is completely different from the MXR family of phasers. It's closer to the Mu-tron line of phasers, and I want the wet signal to be nice and pronounced when I use it.

However, I use a Univibe clone (Drybell Vibe Machine) as the first pedal in my chain after my tuner. That's one modulation pedal that sounds much better pre-dirt.

Re: Can I have some pedal placement advice?

i think your chain is ok. I like my phasing before the OD also. Trust your ears.

Re: Can I have some pedal placement advice?

I've heard that the wah is better after the distortion, but I like my guitar going right into it. The rest seems good, and I always put the modulation after the distortion.

Re: Can I have some pedal placement advice?

I've got the 1974 Vintage Phase 90 Pedal, and I like it before my OD/distortion pedals...also, I like wah after OD/dist. I tried them all both ways, and that's what I liked best!
