Can I put a JB in a tele?

Hey,

After a bit of advice, I don't know a lot about pickups and stuff so if this is really stupid, I do apologise.

I play a squier fat tele, with a duncan designed detonator in the neck (atleast I think its there, I don't really know...) and a standard fender tele pickup in the bridge. I use a mesa/boogie rocket 44 amp.

I only ever use the detonator in my band and I do like the tone, and I'm looking at upgrading the bridge pickup. I play punk rock (think greenday) and my first thought was look at the same pickup as billie joe which is a JB in the bridge.

Can I do this? any suggestions about whether it will suit my guitar/amp?

To put in a standard sized JB, you'd probably just have to get a new Tele bridge with a humbucker slot in it. I don't think that SD makes a Tele JB as a standard pickup, but I bet the Custom Shop could make you one if you don't want to change the bridge.

That's what the JB was first put in, and what Seymour himself does, so I'm sure it would be ok .

Re. your question: You can put a JB in a Tele and get a very decent sound for all kinds of music. Actually, IIRC the very first JB was put in a tele by THE MAN (Seymour) himself (together with a Jazz neck in Jeff Beck's TeleGib).

I have a JB in my strat and consider it the most versatile of all SD HBs. Musicians from all kinds of genres have use it and get great results.

As far as the actual installation is concerned, you'll have to route the PU cavity and get a different bridge, because the JB will obviously not fit into the bridge plate PU hole on a tele. But you can get a tele-type bridge with a cutout for regular-sized HBs (StewMac, for example).

We don't usually stock them but we can get them. Allparts carries the Tele Humbucking Bridge. They come in Black, Gold, and Chrome.

I thought the Fat Tele already had a humbucker slot at the neck...

I had thought about putting a JB in the neck to replace the detonator, but I would end up just using the JB I suspect, and I was looking to have some variation.

Anyway, thanks for the advice guys.
