Can I soak Tuners in WD40/Lighter Fluid

Me and my buddy are going to do some hardcore cleaning on his USA strat. I'm gonna soak the bridge in WD40 or lighter fluid. I was wondering, can I soak the tuners in there too? I don't wanna break anything. Also, should I use WD-40 or lighter fluid to soak the parts?

WD-40 is smelly, sticky stuff... i wouldn't have it on my guitar!

If you only got those two to choose from, i'd get lighter fluid. ;)

WD-40 Sticky? Are you kidding, man? LOL That is some of the most slippery stuff known to man.

If the tuners are sealed, then it should be fine. I wouldn't "soak" them though, just wipe them down with a rag with some on it.

If they are Kluson style tuners, definitely not. Those tuners are not sealed and you'll break down the grease in the casing.

WD40 is a silicon based lubricant. It can be used as a cleaner as well but be careful with it. Soaking your tuning machines in it would be a little overkill IMO. WD40 also tends to attract dirt over time so it can get gummy later on. Most tuning machines that are sealed have a hole in the back of them one or two drops of oil in that hole should be enough. IF they are Kluson tuners you would be better off disassembling them.
