Can I use one 8 ohm speaker and a dummy load to have 4 ohms?

Re: Can I use one 8 ohm speaker and a dummy load to have 4 ohms?

You should have no problems running an 8 ohm speaker with a 4 ohm amp. It will give the amp a little more load, so it may not be as loud, but it certainly won't hurt the amp.

8, i have 2 8 ohm peavey speakers and will have 2 15 inch jbl's soon

the fender vibroverb ran at 8 ohms and its the same circuit aa763, would it have a different TR3 load than a bandmaster when it's the same circuit?

TR3=3rd transformer...the one that runs to the speakers

Yes, just run it up and play.

(fixin', moddin' and design/building for a long time.)

Never ever run a tube amp open circuit with no load, speaker, dummy load, but anything else is whatever sounds cool. Well, I wouldn't run a 16 ohm speaker on a 4-10 Bassman or Super Reverb 2 ohm secondary transformer. That might be pushing it.

Re: Can I use one 8 ohm speaker and a dummy load to have 4 ohms?

where can i get an 8 ohm TR3 tranny to run this through?

Re: Can I use one 8 ohm speaker and a dummy load to have 4 ohms?

could an 8 ohm vibroverb transformer completely solve this problem?

Re: Can I use one 8 ohm speaker and a dummy load to have 4 ohms?

If it's a set of two, have the one that's blown reconed as a 4 ohm speaker and sell the good one to pay for it. Problem solved.

Re: Can I use one 8 ohm speaker and a dummy load to have 4 ohms?

well that would be a good idea, but weber vst is not near florida so the reconing is expected to cost over 150 bucks. If i grab a good fender twin output transformer at 8 ohms i could solve the problem and improve my tone for less than 150 dollars....where can i get a new fender twin tranny?

Re: Can I use one 8 ohm speaker and a dummy load to have 4 ohms?

I don't understand. You don't really have a problem. You can use your 8 ohm speaker with the amp.

OK... If you have TWO pevey speakers at 8 Ohm, why don't you conect them in parallel? The resultant impedance will be 4 Ohm and you could plug them directly to the bandmaster without any modification.

At which impedance are rated the two JBL 15' speakers?

You are explaining this exactly correct. Where I think you may be getting messed up is, that change in impedance with frequency, is the bad aspect of inductive loads. Its an undesirable, and unavoidable, side affect of speaker loads. Amplifier engineers work to prevent that change from harming there amps, with different type of filtering and damping added to the amps circuit so that it doesn't oscillate.

A purely resistive load solves that problem. Having an impedance that doesn't change with frequency is ideal. As a side note, many high-power resistors are wire-wound, and do present a degree of inductance into the equation. ;)

Well, I admit I feel defeated. :D. This sounds very logical to me and I don't find any reason why it should be wrong.

Well explained Artie!!

Re: Can I use one 8 ohm speaker and a dummy load to have 4 ohms?

You're thinking of replacing your 4 ohm tranny with an 8 ohm tranny? Hmm....Mojo makes a great sounding Super Reverb/Bassman tranny with a 2 ohm, 4 ohm and 8 ohm tap. Contact my brother Bruce at Mission Amps. He keeps them in stock. 303-423-4103 or Missionamps.com. I've used this tranny in some of my own projects and it sounds great. Tell him you want the tranny we used in the MISSION CRUSADER amp Bruce and I designed. That said: you really can just use your 8 ohm JBL with your existing 4 ohm tranny...though the tone and output will suffer just a little. It'll sound a little rougher and grainier but no harm will come to your amp. And when you plug another 8 ohm speaker into the extension jack you'll have the 4 ohm load your amp wants to see. Lew
