Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

Yes, if you notice, the back plane of the pot is typically used as ground (you have to run a wire from the back of the pot to the output jack ground to do this - unfortunately, it looks like that one drawing is missing that for the volume. It shows it for the tone.).

Electricity flows from positive to ground. The middle lug is the input of the volume control. The + of the jack is wired to the middle lug of the volume. The pickup + is wired to one side of the volume, and the - ground is wired to the other. As you turn the volume up, you are connecting the + from the jack to the + of the pickup. As you turn the volume down, you are grounding out the signal before it can reach the pickup, effectively turning the guitar off.

I'm going to draw a schematic and post it later for your approval.

Or should I say your CORRECTIONS.

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

I just did the schematic. Let me upload to Flickr and post it.

I had some problems doing this elsewhere recently. Flickr changed something and I couldn't find the Copy Image Address option!

Let's try Photobucket:

the neg pup wire goes to the pot casing, the pos pup wire to where you have the neg in the pic

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

that should work fine

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

One more stupid question:

If there are white and black leads from the pup (I can't see anything now without pulling the output jack out), is the black the positive?

And if it's center wire that's wrapped in other wire, is the center wire the positive?

I ordered yesterday, so it should be here Monday, with a miracle delivery of tomorrow.

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

the center wire is the positive for sure, if its black and white it probably doesn't matter since one isn't shielding the other

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

Thanks for EVERYTHING!

I'll post when I get this DONE !

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

So now I sit with my drill, soldering iron, solder and Budweiser cooling in the fridge--praying for delivery of my pot and knobs today. (I had to buy two knobs.)

In honor of you and this Seymour Duncan site, I'm next going buy an SD Woody for my 12-string Washburn dread, because I never touch the damn 12-string but maybe if it's amplified, I'll get into it more. And the same for my 6-string Takamine dread after that.

I promise to not get too drunk when it's time to drill the hole, but I'll have a much funnier story to tell if I do.

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

I'm sure you can handle it fine, but my only 2-cent tip there is always test each connection and component along the way before putting it all back together and tightening down all the 'screws'; and always save the celebration until after it's completed and working correctly.

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

Ridiculous hum.

I didn't bother drilling the hole for the pot, b
because this ain't working at all.

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

If you switch the positive and negative wires of the pickup, does it change the hum at all?

I'd have to see how you are installing this. Could also try shielding around the pickup, but I'm not sure where you are putting the pickup or where the hum is coming from.

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

I'll try switching the leads tomorrow, but as far as shielding the pup, I don't see any way or reason to do that.

Re: Can I wire a passive soundhole pup to guitar's pre-amp?

Well, I actually went out and got another pot and output jack, and rewired. Went to Radio Shack for the pot.

At full gain on the guitar, not a drop of buzz. Bring it down a little, and there she comes.

However, I noticed when I sat the guitar on its stand, right next to the amp, no buzz. So let me start by trying my different cables.
