Can SH1 Neck and SH11 match ?

Hi there !!

Almost everything is in the title.

Let me introduce... I'm recently bought an old 70s Les Paul (Mahogany) like made in Japan. I would like to upgrade the pickups with a new set.

I'm playing Rock (alternative big rock), I was kid in the 90's and my sound influence goes from, Foo Fighters to Pearl Jam passing by Silverchair and more recently QOTSA (not exhaustive but gives an idea). I like round and warm sound, quite fat but also I want to keep something little vintage to fit with the age of the guitar.

So, at the moment my choice is :
Neck : SH1 59'
Bridge : SH11

both with cover to keep the style of the guitar (actually not sure if it change the sound a lot...?).

Can you tell me what you think these ?

Many thanks for your help and sorry for my fren(ch)glish :7:

Cheers !

I can’t answer that question . But I will advise you to go on their site . There is a lined graph that shows the out put level of the pickups .

Yes they'll match and should be a good combo for what you want.

Re: Can SH1 Neck and SH11 match ?

SH-11 and SH-1 combo worked for Neil Zaza in his Cort signature. Have you considered Pearly Gates in the neck?

Re: Can SH1 Neck and SH11 match ?

How so please tell

STK-S10b, SSL-1, SSL-2, SSL-5, SSL-6, STK-S4b, STK-S7, STK-S6, STK-S9: all hopeless.

Slash Neck, Pearly Gates Neck, Jazz Neck: also hopeless.

'59 is hotter than the Pegasus?

Sentient vs. Slash Bridge?

Jazz Bridge vs. Custom Custom?

Back on topic...welcome to the forum!

This is a great combo, that should match well. The SH-11 is one of my favorite bridge pickups BTW.

Re: Can SH1 Neck and SH11 match ?

I didn't like the Sh1 & Sh11 combo in my lp copy that much. The 59n was fine but the CC had a brasher(or boxy) midrange sound to it, the transition from neck to bridge wasn't that nice tonally for me.

The sh1 & sh14 did match well in tone & output but I wanted more midrange & similar bass amount in the bridge, so I eventually settled on the sh1 & sh5 combo. The high aren't round sounding on it but the rest was perfect, keeping the bridge tone backed down a little helps with it.

I'd suggest starting with the sh14 & then magnet swapping it into other custom variants or just get the sh11 & if it doesn't work out then change the magnet in it to convert it to a sh5 or sh14.

Re: Can SH1 Neck and SH11 match ?

SH-14 makes more sense to me as well.

Pegasus/Sentient would provide some middle ground if a bit lower gain is desired and the 59 neck is subsequently too boomy.

Well then answer this for me . What single coil is good for the Seth lover .

I think Mincer would like us to stay on-topic, but to answer your question...

With the Seth I'd go with any vintage output single that you like: SSL-1/2, Five-Two, APS-1/2, one of the Antiquities, STK-S4, STK-S10.

I had forgotten about the output bars on the single coil sized humbuckers, which is hard to believe since the Vintage Rails/Duckbuckers are way off (hotter than the Cool Rails? C'mon!). They also have the Little 59 bridge hotter than the Hot Rails and JB Jr.. Absurd!

Re: Can SH1 Neck and SH11 match ?

Not a good pair for an LP. '59N's have had numerous complaints here about being bassy/boomy in LP's. Likewise, members have said SH-11's are too warm and dark in LP's. You could well have the same issues if you go this route. WLH's and A2P's are better choices.

Re: Can SH1 Neck and SH11 match ?

Numerous complaints by people who don't know how to adjust their amps and/or choose an appropriate bridge pickup to pair with it, given the tone of their particular LP copy?

Sure, some LPs may be too dark and inherently bass-heavy, but I would not begin with that assumption and malign what may be an excellent choice.

If proper steps are taken and the 59 still doesn't work the you can try a polished A4 or swap it out for a Sentient or Jazz or Full Shred, depending on just how bad it is.

I looked at this a couple years ago, and over several months there were a dozen firsthand complaints from members about '59N's being bassy, all in LP's. Maybe like you said, they were all incompetent. Except that some were very experienced members, and an Admin or two. There are less problematic neck PU's for LP's. Being a first post from a guy not sure of his English, he's not a likely candidate for changing out magnets. A JazzN seems like a better choice for him.

Likewise, I think about every post I've read here about SH-11's in LP's has been that they're too warm. Again, mag swaps don't seem to be the answer for this guy. A SH-14 or '59/Custom seem like a better fit for him.

Re: Can SH1 Neck and SH11 match ?

For the record I didn't recommend an SH-1N with an SH-11, rather what bridge pickup would pair better with an SH-1N (Pegasus and SH-14).

An SH-14/SH-1N can really kick ass in a Les Paul, especially for the type of music the OP wants to play!

The OP wants his LP sound warm, round, and fat. For that purpose, I say yes to SH-11 and suggest PG that pairs better eq wise to SH-11 than SH-1 and retains vintage character instead of Jazz or A2Pro.

Re: Can SH1 Neck and SH11 match ?

You're right, of course. It ought to be about finding a neck pickup to pair with an SH-11.

Re: Can SH1 Neck and SH11 match ?

First of all, a DiMarzio PAF pro is a great pickup for the neck with a 59.

That said - those pickups are about opposite on EQ. 59 Is a smile, and CC is frown. But I think they would give some very unique sounds in each position and a very different blend in the middle.

There are a number of threads on adjusting a CC if you don't dig it in the bridge. There are mag swaps for the 59 neck if boomy.
