Can small amps sound big?

Re: Can small amps sound big?

In the studio, good rooms and good micing techniques can go a looooong way towards making a small amp sound like a big bad one. I've heard some absolutely stellar tones come out of tiny amps that were recorded right.

However, I find that that grand-slam deepness and bass of a good 4x12 is quite addicting. :naughty:

Re: Can small amps sound big?

Of course, you can drive a 4x12 with a small amp. With the right amp, that setup can sound huge without excessive volume.

Re: Can small amps sound big?

I dont play amps above 30 watts (AC30's although they are loud 30 watters) I think small amps are good cos you can drive them and I'm an el84 class a (dont debate that VOX's arent class a cos i know all that) kinda guy and you need ALOT of tubes to get much more then 30 watts in that kinda configuration.

The Fender Pro Junior sounds ten feet tall - THe VOX AD15VT sounds very good for what it is, too!

+1 My Pro junior may be small, but it's got big dog tude! I can dial in some wicked tones on my Cube 30 as well.

I think this all goes back to my "play the amp" post.

Still, there is something to be said for that mammoth Mesa dual-rectofier shake-the-undigested-meat-from-my-bowels-moving more air than a category 5 hurricane-9 on the richter scale-armageddon is coming sort of sound.

Oui, Sí, & YES!

My '95 Pro Jr will knock you into last week (with just the single 10", let alone an extension cab), AND the best part, it sounds incredible while doing it at the same time too.

Looks like you got your answer Kernel.

Re: Can small amps sound big?

I"m suprised that nobody mentioned a tweed deluxe. With the right tubes and speaker, they can sound H-U-G-E. I almost always mic the amp, unless I"m in a very small room. This helps you keep the stage volume down, hence you hear each other better and play better. Of course you need a drummer with some touch, that realizes you don't have to be like BAM-BAM on the drums. The key is the volume of the drums.

Supro 15 watt with a 10 inch speaker used on Whole Lot of Love, by Jimmy Page...

I'm another guy that says: YES.

I'm loving my Blues Jr. every day.

Re: Can small amps sound big?

I've been touring with a Fender Super Champ for the past 6 years. 18w, 2x6V6's, 1 x 10" speaker. Once it has an SM57 in its face and lets the PA do the work, it sounds huge. In 2003, we toured Australia supporting Joe Cocker, playing large theatres and concert venues. Joe's guitar player had a Bogner head, a 100w Marshall head and two quad boxes. We did 20 shows with them, and at the soundcheck for the final show, Joe's FOH engineer came up to the stage and walked around my amp a couple of times, shaking his head. He said "What the hell is this thing? There's no way in the world that I can get the sound you're getting from (Joe's guitarist's) rig. Too much volume off stage, too many speakers, too much spill."

Yep, small amps can sound huge. Depending on the music style, the bottom end that large amps and 4x12's produce are exactly the frequencies that an experienced sound engineer will be REMOVING at the console so that they don't conflict with the body of the bass and the kick drum. The 4x12 design was created for conditions that date back to 1966, when PA systems were inefficient and underpowered. In smaller rooms, the long throw and extraneous low end that 4 x 12's produce is an engineer's nightmare. Their direct offstage sound is often painful and nothing like what you are perceiving standing close to the amp. Multiple speaker setups for recording only serve to confuse the diaphragm of condenser mics. The focus of a single speaker, in an amp that is driving its power stage nicely but not blasting out the windows, is a thing of great beauty.

yes for sure. and after wahwah's post i'm not even going to try and add anything else. :)

Re: Can small amps sound big?

You know, I think this is a question of "HOW SMALL"???

I think an amp like a Fender Deluxe with a 12" speaker or a Supro Thunderbolt with a 15" can get a HUGE sound on record.

A Champ with an 8" speaker can sound good...but I wouldn't call Clapton's tone on Layla "huge" or "big"...not Marshall Stack "big" anyway.

So I have not heard a really small amp (Champ or smaller) sound big or huge.

Although I think Zappa used to sometimes record solos with a Pignose...much as I like Frank Zappa, I didn't hear a tone from the Pignose that I would want to have.

Traynor YCV20. It's 15 watts, all tube, sounds beautiful, has an outstanding warranty, is made in canada yet recognized for it's quality outside the country, and costs around $700 new. I think they go for fairly cheap second-hand as well. Most people seem to like the YCV50 which is 50 watts but I happen to have the YCV20 because i didnt think I needed the extra wattage. Believe me, this thing is not lacking in the volume department. When I had a drummer to jam, I obviously had to crank the thing but it matched him without being at full volume, and he plays hard like bonham. I got cleans across fairly well in that situation too. If you look on this site you will find alot of info about Traynor.

Re: Can small amps sound big?

The Mesa F-30 is small and can still get huge tones at relatively low volumes.

Re: Can small amps sound big?

I saw Kansas in 1982 from the second row and Rich Williams was using a Fender Deluxe propped up on a metal chair. This was in the Brendyn Byrne Arena which holds around 20,000 for a concert. His guitar sounded huge.

Re: Can small amps sound big?

I have a Carvin Vintage 16. While it can get loud on it's own it really doesn't sound "big." But when I disconnect the internal speaker and hook the amp up to a larger 1X12 that I made it can sound pretty healthy. Helps to round it out. Gives it more girth and bottom. Not like a 50 watt amp hooked to a 4X12 mind you, but pretty satisfying.

I have this amp, and I agree.

As far as recording, small rigs can be made to sound huge. Not an expert there, so I'll leave it at that.
