Can the Seymour AJB-5 be run passive

I have a friend who bought an AJB-5 Active pickup for his bass thinking he needed this because he has an active preamp (which has a standard passive pickups running through it).

When he took It back to the store they told him it would work passive as well.

Is this true?

If it is like active guitar pups, I don't think so - or it would work but not sound very good.

I have an active pre-amp that used to run passive J pups. I installed the AJB-5s with no issues (running active). I just have have take a little care to watch the volume. The AJB-5s are hotter and can overdrive my pre with the volume knob all the way up and I really crank on the strings.
