Can you attach necks to Gibsons?

Re: Can you attach necks to Gibsons?

You could get a bolt on Les Paul body and neck from Warmoth, or change a fretboard on a set neck Les Paul. You technically could change the neck of a set neck Les Paul, but it probably wouldn't be worth it. What do you have in mind?

I would say the neck pocket is not really sized for that. It would not be very stable at all.

Re: Can you attach necks to Gibsons?

The neck on a LP can be changed, but you really need a VERY competent luthier to even attempt it. The glue needs to be heated so the neck can be removed, and care needs to be taken with regard to the finish. There will also be touch up needed on the nitro.

It's a MAJOR undertaking, and will cost some serious $$ in labor.

Are you taking about bolting a neck, or gluing a new neck in? I was under the impression you wanted to bolt one on.

You can do anything to any guitar, but a different neck on a Gibson is major surgery. Find a reeeeally good luthier. If you're just wanting the ebony fretboard, find a 70's LP Custom. That was standard issue.

My 1976 Les Paul Deluxe had some serious neck troubles..... I had it for a few years and it seemed ever 6 months i needed to have a fret dress done.... Finally the rosewood board had been sanded down too thin over the years and i had to have it removed and a new one put on...... The trouble was a factory mistake... They had glued the neck in wrong and the fingerboard was glued on wrapped over the bad neck/body joint.... so the Fingerboard would move as it was under a strange stress....

To get the fingerboard off they used a heater and layed it on the board... That heats up the glue under the fingerboard. Once off they steamed the neck joint to unglue the neck from the body. Then the had to reglue the neck in right and make up a new fingerboard. Gibson does not sell the inlays so the repair man had to make his own.... He put binding around the neck again as well.... It looks good! And then the very end they had to refinnish the neck. Basicly it was almost like they made a new guitar out of the old parts. Saddly i didn't think to ask them to shave the thick neck on that mother down some...... It has a real baseball bat neck. It took the guy about 7-8 months to get my guitar back to me as he worked on and off on it. The end bill was extremely low...... The total was about $550 Canadian in 1995...

I trashed a neck on a LP once and talked to a bunch of folks about possibly getting a new neck put on it. Over and over I was told that it was not cost effective to put a new one on (try $1600 on for size). You can find ebony fretboards on Les Paul Studios quite often.

Yikes! I got a real deal from the guy who worked on my LP if yours was going to cost $1600.... I knew he spent many many hours on my LP that he didn't include in the bill. I also knew he had it out to another shop for some help from another builder on that guitar. Towards the end i was getting upset that my LP was gone 8 months and was bitiching to him on the phone a lot.... Looking back at what he did for me a few years after he did the work i knew i owed him a lot....

That was the quote from the official Gibson types. Sounds like you knew someone with the heart and soul of a guitar enthusiast. Eventually, I had mine epoxied all over the neck. It looked quite strange, but I was told that it was as good as new. I traded it for some recording gear last year.

I was just wondering if there was a way to get a Zakk Wylde Les Paul (just get a Classic or something and put a maple neck on there with ebony fretboard). But nevermind.....
