Can you confirm this is a real 1975 Les Paul Deluxe?

Re: Can you confirm this is a real 1975 Les Paul Deluxe?

I have seen a serial number like that before, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about 70's LP's to know where it belongs and where it doesn't. If you post that over at the My Les Paul Forum, you'll get some expert information pretty quickly. If you don't have an account or don't want to create one, I'd be happy to post the link over there for you. Let me know.

Well, serial numbers for 75, 76 and 77 were all on oval decals. So if its just the presence of an oval shape then that is absolutely normal for that period.
Of course there could be a refin, due to the double looking edge around the oval. Needless to say, look for any headstock damage that might have lead to such an occurence.

Yes looks legit to me. Late 75, 76 and 77 all head decal serial numbers on the headstocks. I had a 77 Standard with one (one guitar i regret selling).

Thanks Jeff! Would really appreciate a repost and better understanding of what this is... Refinish likely? Have been searching images and finding 75 deluxes without ovals.

^don't assume that the images all are of the searched year. This period can be hard to date, plus people like to claim earlier dates either through ignorance or as a deliberate attempt to conjure an increased price for sale.
But additionally 75 marked the splitting of factories and duties between Kalamazoo and the brand new Nashville factory. But you can imagine that the 1st of Jan wasn't straight into full production. Kalamazoo still would have made some with the old 6 digit system.

Oops, the posting has been deleted. Weird unless the guy knew he had a fake/refin.

Weird...owner told me it sold about the same time, but could be a coincidence... Either way, glad I asked and appreciate your help!

Always glad to help. Wish I had been online sooner today to help get some answers.

I'd love to have bought that guitar. I love red Deluxes, and the vintage P90 conversion was a really nice touch.

Yeah and he was looking for an SG and I've got a 62 I want to trade but guess it wasn't meant to be.

Thanks again to everyone for all the input...

You know the Deluxes were left over P-90 gold top bodies! After Gibson switched to humbuckers they wanted to use the bodies (figuring no one wanted P-90s any more) so they used a P-90 cover and mounted an Epiphone mini humbucker in it. Pretty clever.

That is indeed how the Deluxe was "invented" in '68 or so, though it later became a model in its own right, not just made up of parts. The initial '68 reintroduction of the Les Paul included P-90 gold tops (my friend has one of these – very cool guitar). These weren't so hotly received at the time, so they didn't stick around too long.

As you said, the mini humbucker rings were even made from P-90 pickup covers. However, they aren't true pickup "rings" in the typical sense. The pickups are held solidly in position in relation to the rings, using a spacer and a soldered nut. The entire pickup/ring assembly moves up and down when the pickup height is adjusted. The height screws thread in to a metal plate that spans the bottom of the pickup cavity.
