Can you mix and match pre amp tubes?

Can you use different brands of pre amp tubes together in the same amp? Thanks.

Brand and type of preamp tube can usually be mix and matched however which way you want

Yeah, I read this tip from Gearjoneser to put a premium tube - GT 12AX7-C in the first slot, V1 and put JJ's in the others (not that JJ's aren't premium, just not as expensive as the GT-C or M).

I think most 9-pin pre tubes are interchangable. Though some feel a "balanced" tube performs best in the phase inverter spot.
