Can you play guitar through a bass combo (BM25)?

I have a Marshall DSL 5C for guitar, but I also have a crappy little MG15 which I'm keeping for my kids, should they ever decide to start playing.

However, I'm looking at buying a cheap Marshall BM25 combo for playing my bass through. Question is - could my kids also use this for guitar, if I stuck a dirt pedal in front of it?

I understand you shouldn't ideally use a guitar amp to play bass, but it's okay the other way around isn't it?

I don't really want three amps in the house when two will do.

A practice bass guitar amplifier will have EQ and a gain structure to suit the frequency range of the bass guitar. This will tend to make an electric guitar sound pretty sterile.

The exception to this sweeping generalisation is the Fender Bassman.

Bass amps tend not to accentuate the midrange the way guitar amps do. They tend to sound scooped, boomy, compressed, and muddy with guitars.

It'll work and I've done it, but it works A LOT better with a modeler than a dirt box. Back in college I was sharing an apartment with my bass player and we used to jam together though his bass amp, him plugged straight in and me with a POD into the parallel input. Think of the bass amp as a tiny PA and you'll have the right idea.

yes, can be done. And wont harm anything. Ive had fun playing a few time thru my Ampeg bass amp. As others have eluded to, obviously since it isnt voiced the same, you arent going to get the cut of the guitar amp, but I dont thing you are asking about performance quality. Just in general.

Can be done and when tweaked well sounds very good from my experience. And I second the notion of a processor rather than a dirt box.

Also, I think part of that processor's work should include cabinet emulation.
