Can you really fix a speaker with nail polish?

Got an old Vox student amp that's just got "the" tone for me, but the speaker is starting to tear. It's the original 1965 speaker with the little bulldog on it and it sounds so cool. Does nail polish or any other way work or is the speaker toast? :smack: I'm not sure if this is a 6 or 8 or what as far as size.

Not really nail polish- but Sally Hansons 'HARD AS NAILS" It's clear, and has little tiny fibers in it.

Depending on the size of the tear, it may be possible to patch it. Both of my Celestion 12's I got cheap on eBay because they were torn. Then I patched them with white glue and toilet tissue. Yes, toilet tissue - it's a legitimate, expert-approved method. Search the bulletin board on Ted Weber's website and you can probably find a description of the process. It's simple, fast, and it works.

If the tear is too big to patch, then I would suggest contacting Ted Weber anyway. Chances are, he can recone your little Bulldog for you, preserving as much of the vintage value as possible.

Thank you guys. I have yet to pull the speaker and give it a good inspection, but when I bought it and had the local tech go over it, he advised me it's starting to go. You can hear it as well. Not worried so much about the value, but the TONE! To me, it sounds like a little AC30 or AC15 in a tiny package. I recorded with it using it for one of three tracks along with two other amps and the Vox tone comes through so well. You can tell it's a Vox.

Great amp you can pick up for about $100 or $200 on ebay by the way.

I use that stuff to prevent paint chips on the surface of my guitars from peeling, or any other application where i need to clear over a small area.

Well, I did the Sally Hansen hard as nails thing on my speaker. It was ripped in six spots. I couldn't find a thing anywhere on how to fix a speaker with glue and toilet tissue so I just did this. Some of the rips were about an inch long at least. The speaker really needs a recone but I'll see what it sounds like after this. Put about four thick coats on each side of the rips. Hopefully that will do the trick.

The cone on this speaker measures 7 inches across. What a weird size. Anyone ever hear of a 7? Or is this something where it's really an 8 but it measures 7....you know what I mean?

Well, time for a recone I guess. Played the amp today and the speaker now sounds harsh and brittle. There must have been too many rips in this small speaker and the tone is just gone now. I doubt Sally Hansen need break in time, LOL.
