Can you run a classic 50 on 2 tubes?

Can I run my classic 50 (3 preamp tubes, 4x EL84) with just 2 power tubes? (Pulling the 2 outer tubes)

Just found out the new tubes I'm getting are in a set of 2.

Also let me know anything I should know before screwing with any of this stuff. Thanks.

I have a Classic 50 410. Im not sure if it can run on 2 but I would think not because those are the power tubes. Another thing is that if you need an extra tube you might as well have one. I would check out some Sovtek tubes. Thats what I run and the amp sounds like a million bucks. Hope this helps.

I woudl not run any $ EL84 amp on 2 tubes...EL84's tend to run very hot and running only 2 of them could make a big problem in the long run...my advise, don't do it.

K I won't then.

Only reason I was asking this was because I'm getting them for free. I guess I could just buy 2 more JJs.

The real question is if you can get another amp for free if you F the one you have up by running two tubes. :laugh2:

Btw... how old is your C50? Mine uses the 4 x EL84 rig too but the new ones use 2 x 6L6. I'm pretty sure my amp is from between 1991-94.

I thought I wasn't crazy!

I saw a new Classic 50 the other say and could have sworn that I saw a pair of 6L6's but I knew that the ones I used to see had EL84's in them!

Thanks!

Buy another set if you can get a set that matches the set you have now...always used matched power tubes...

/sigh I figured that's how it would be I was just crossing my fingers that it wasn't heh...

Oh well, I'll tell the guy to keep em unless he finds a set in his shop. My tubes will last me till Christmas I'm sure, they're just getting a little noisey. By then money will be a little easier to come by.

I just had to paint my car, run a new exhaust, did a tune up, and one of the axles went out so I'm having that dealt with right now. So yea, lol won't have much in the wallet for a little while, no worries though.
