I think I want an SG. I can guy an SG Special for a hundred bucks the 400 costs about three times that much I would swap out the pickups either wasy. So it it's just adding a nother volume and volume pot I should just buy a Special, right?

And routing the body out for the extra controls, plus the switch, plus the new backplate.
What are you like with woodwork?

Oh, not bad at woodworking. But it looked to me like the control cavity was the same size in the pictures I looked at at least the covers looked the same. I though just drilling a couple of holes putting the pots in and wire it up like standerd Gibson wiring.

No. Epi SG Specials have bolt on necks that are set deeper into the body. Some of the materials are cheaper too, that's why they cost less. You can get used G400's for $200 or less, in nice condition, maybe $150. I wouldn't even consider getting a Special when you can get a much better G400 for a little bit more. If you're a 12 year old kid, then get the Special, otherwise don't.

The G-400's are a big step up in quality from the lower lines. They have better electronics, better build quality, and much better pickups. I saw a lot of Epiphone G-400 selling NEW a while back for a little over 250 dollars. Online stored were blowing them out at the time. Don't know if they are still that low, but you can snag one for around 200-250 used any day.

Right. G400's are better quality all around, and used ones are a real bargain. I've seen used recent-production G400's with the (big) batwing pickguard go for around $200, and they're nice guitars. In fact, I've seen a total of about 30 G400 variants over the years (PU's, pick guards, tailpieces, vibratos, finishes, colors, etc) and all have been well-made and a good value for the price. I have a few myself.
