Can you insert a single coil in the space of a humbucker?

For example, my guitar has a humbucker on the neck, and I may change it for a DiMarzio HS-3, which is a humbucker, but has the body and shape of a single coil... so is it possible to be done?

Someone posted a picture of an adapter from allparts that does
exactly that. Its a pickup ring that puts a strat pickup into a HB
slot. Maybe search for "allparts"?
