Yo,

My combination is going to be:

neck: seymour duncan quarter pound ssl4 (t)
middle: seymour duncan quarter pound ssl4 (t)
bridge: seymour duncan quarter pound ssl7 (t)

t means its taped it has higher output.

What about caneceling hum ? I heard that long time ago people were making dummy coils (?) they were in middle and they canceled hum I think. Where I can get one like that ?

What does version with Reverse wound, reverse polarity do ?

Thanks

the rw/rp middle pup will give you humcancelling when the neck and middle or bridge and middle pups are on at the same time.

ive never put a dummy coil in any of my guitars. with a good shielding job you should have little trouble with noise

Re: Canceling Hum at Quarter Pound SSL4 and SSL7

I have done plenty of research about dummy coils, stopping short of actually trying it in a guitar. The reason nobody knows much about them is because they don't work incredibly well. They change the sound of the pickups whenever they are in use so generally speaking, they are not very useful.

Yo,

Im really set about hum canceling ...i wanted to have 3 way switch (neck, bridge, and neck&bridge). Please help me with dummy coil ... Where I can buy one or who can make one for me ? Now something funny: I dont care about price lol

Sorry if I'm going a bit off-topic here, but I'm just curious as to why you're going with the staggered version in the bridge? I assume you know that flat and staggered are the only differences between the 4 and 7.

Btw - I have a pair of the 4's. Killer pups. (Both tapped.) You're gonna love 'em.

If you really want to cancel hum, use a noise reducer pedal. Very simple solution, though you will have a slight loss of sustain and harmonics. I have a noise reducer in my Zoom G-1 multi-effects pedal, and at a very low setting (I set it to 2 or 3 out of a maximum of 10) it gets rid of single coil hum. My amp is very noisy though, so with a better amp, 1 or 2 would work to get rid of hum.

I heard that that setup wtih ssl7 on bridge is a killer ... Im still looking for that dummy coil ... I really need that well I just want to be pure in gutiar ... without any effects.

sorry ,,,, whats the diffrence in sound between ssl4 and ssl7.

thanks

Re: Canceling Hum at Quarter Pound SSL4 and SSL7

I can't help thinking that a dummy coil will affect the sound too much. I'd stick with the tried and tested good shielding and noise supressor pedal if needed.
Quite frankly although single coils do pick up a fair amount of noise once you're all cranked up and playing you don't really notice it.

Well, if you're dead set on using a dummy coil, you need to match the wind of whatever pickup it is being used with. Having said that, the only way (unless you know how to wind) is to get another SSL4 and hide it inside your guitar. The magnet MUST face 90 degrees to the other pickups so that it does not sense the strings. It can be wired in series or parallel, though parallel would be better to retain the tone a bit more. Read the Bluesbucker fan page (google it). That guitar came with one stock and used P-90 soapbars. The principle is the same as stacked pickups, except the dummy coil is not there to pick up any of the string vibrations. It is there as an antenna to sense the ambient electro-magnetic nosie that causes hum (and then it is cancelled out in conjunction with the real pickup -all that is left is the signal from the strings).
