Can't decide: JB or '59 in Strat bridge?

I've decided that I'll try a Jazz neck in my alder-bodied Strat, since I'll be using the neck for clean/low gain rather than high gain. But, I can't make up my mind about the bridge...JB or '59? This is practically impossible to figure out when you can't hear the pups in your guitar first to see if you like them! The JB seems to be a "favorite", but many people are complaining of it being too trebly; this could be bad in an alder Strat. The '59 has a lower output, but IMO they sound similar on the sound clips. (I know; computer speakers aren't the best for the clips!) Since the '59 is compared to the "PAF", it should have enough gain for classic and southern rock. I've read a lot of reviews, but 98% of them have these pups in LP style mahogany guitars, and that doesn't help me out at all.

in a strat, i like the 59 better. imo, better cleans for a strat, and it wont be as high output which is good for less gain/clean stuff. imo.

I can say I have a C-5 in my strat and the box said to think of it as a 59 with more bass and output. The thing sounds soooooo thick. I actually just swapped out the pickguard and pickups from the guitar (with the C-5) I built and put it in my american strat and I Love the tone! Heavy and sweet. I know I'll catch flack from the other members, but if you didn't know any better, distorted you'd think it was a LP. It's a rhythem monster!

With a Jazz neck, the JB would be a great match. They were literally made for each other.

Sweet, I've been pondering this question myself, only instead of the '59, it was the C-5. Can the C-5 can be looked at as more of a versatile pickup between metal and pop/rock?

I have an alder jackson with a licensed floyd which is bound to be more trebly than a strat...and the JB ive got in its bridge sounds amazing! Not too trebly at all, just really thick and full sounding...with a decent amount of kick and is very versatile.

I say go the JB...you wont go back!

Especially with the jazz neck, thats meant to be one of the best combos ever!

Re: Can't decide: JB or '59 in Strat bridge?

I have a ? about my switching scheme...

Since I don't need a split humbucker "single coil" tone, I'm thinking about this:

Position 1 - Bridge only
Position 2 - Bridge + Split Neck
Position 3 - Bridge + Neck
Position 4 - Neck + Split Bridge
Position 5 - Neck only

Does anyone know how positions 2 and 4 would sound? I got the idea from the SD soundclips of the single coil sized humbuckers. I really liked the extra sharpness when the JB Jr., for example, was mixed with the middle single coil. Would this same concept work with the full sized humbuckers? Can someone tell me if they should be wired in series or parallel? I'm thinking parallel, but what do I know! Thanks for any and all help; I'd like to have everything figured out by the end of the week, so I can drop off my guitar to be modded.

Re: Can't decide: JB or '59 in Strat bridge?

Lew's right, the Jazz and JB were made to go as a set and work well with 250k pots.

Re: Can't decide: JB or '59 in Strat bridge?

Seymour designed the Jazz/JB set to go into Jeff Beck's Tele-Gib, which was equipped with a 3 saddle bridge, 3 way switching, and 250k control pots. This seems to be a good combo. I think Mr. Beck used this set up on "Because we've ended as Lovers". I think he sounded pretty good. ;)

Re: Can't decide: JB or '59 in Strat bridge?

I really like the 59 in a strat. I had a JB in a strat for a long time. It was great for the harder rock stuff, but I think I would have been happier with a 59 or Seth Lover. My bandmate has a 59/Jazz combo in a strat and it is very cool for classic rock and hard rock tones.

Thanks for the opinions! Anyone have anything to say about my switching scheme? And, I would like to know more about 250K vs. 500K tone pots for humbuckers.

I've drawn this up everywhich way I can, and I just don't see any way to do this with a conventional 5-way. The problem is, at position #3, the "common" terminal of the 5-way only connects to the middle lug. There's no way to have both the neck and bridge "on" at this position.

You will either need to use a superswitch, or go to the Seymour Duncan home page, click on Support, then schematics, then use the humbucker pull-down menu, and look over all the diagrams that say "2 humbuckers, 5-way, split". There's several different options, that achieve close to what you want, just in a different order.

Re: Can't decide: JB or '59 in Strat bridge?

I forgot to mention that I know I'll need a "super switch"! I believe that it was OEM on the Big Apple Strat, and that had similar switching capabilities. Unless I just use 2 push/pull tone pots with a regular 3-way switch. Will push/pull tone pots fit in a Strat's control cavity? That might be easier to wire up (and save me a few bucks in labor costs).

Re: Can't decide: JB or '59 in Strat bridge?

Custom 5 Tremspaced. I've tried the others mentioned, and always come back to the C-5. It sits right between a 59 and JB's output, and when you go from your single neck to the bridge, it doesn't sound like you've changed guitars, like pups with mids that are TOO thick. Sounds best pretty close to the strings too.

Yes, close to the strings is what most say.

Push/Pull pots will fit in a Strat's control cavity without a problem. I find the wiring for these kind of switches much easier to deal with than a Superswitch. Besides, I like the sound options, which are as follow:
1. Neck Humbucker
2. Both pickups humbucking
3. Bridge Humbucker
4. Bridge Split to single
5. Bridge single and Neck humbucker
6. Both pickups split to single coil
7. Neck single combined with Bridge humbucking
8. Neck split to single

It's simple to wire, and you get 3 more combos than with the MegaSwitch. ;)

Re: Can't decide: JB or '59 in Strat bridge?

I've decided to go with the '59 Trembucker in the bridge. I'll probably just get the 3-way switch and not worry about splitting the pups.
