Can't figure out what this diagram is saying

I'm getting a Phat Cat for my Les Paul Jr so I thought it'd be a good idea to check out a wiring diagram
Once looking at it, I saw the solder icon saying I should solder the shielding to the volume pot? Do I get the ground wire out of the shielding and solder it to the pot or?

The shielding is the ground part of the wire. Phat Cats don't have an extra (3rd) wire for a separate ground.

I've got 9 Phat Cats and changed the magnets in all of them. If you find it weak and thin in the bridge slot, or very dark in the neck, it's the A2 magnets. It's easy enough to swap them out and dial in the EQ's.

So just solder the shield to the pot? Sounds simple enough.
Also, what magnets did you change to?

Just a minute. The SD Phat Cat is a P90 style pickup inside a humbucker-sized metal cover. The normal pickup for any of the Gibson Junior model guitars is a P90 under a plastic "dogear" cover. I am going to assume that the OP's guitar is an Epiphone of some sort.

The outer, braided portion of your conductor, is the ground. You can solder it as is or unwrap it little and then solder it so you don't fry the hot lead. It's very similar to a regular mono guitar cable that also has the ground braided around the hot lead's insulation.

Blueman said it. the braided wire is the earth wire.

I really like an A8/A4 magnet pair in bridge P-90's. More output and mids than twin A2's (so it doesn't get drowned out by the neck PU), and the high end isn't so piercing like twin A5's. Surprisingly, in bridge Phat Cats, twin A2's and twin A5's both sound pretty thin. When you lift the Phat Cat's cover, the ground wire is soldered to the cover on one end, so you can only lift the other end; lift carefully. Unlike virtually every other P-90, there are no screws to hold the baseplate to the coils (design flaw) so the cover holds the PU together.
