Can't figure out which pickup to get...I've tried a bunch...

So I have a super strat with a Floyd, maple neck and alder body. I've tried a Duncan Distortion, JB (both w/ an A8 and A2), Custom 5 (tried A8), Motor City Pickups Garuda, Motor City Pickups Hot Head. Everything is either too bright, too dark or too mushy. So far the Hot Head is my favorite, but it needs a bit more high end...it is kinda even sounding. The JB was really good, but the bottom end was too loose. I should be getting in a Dimarzio Super Distortion this week to try out as well.

Any suggestions? I was thinking possibly a Full Shred? Maybe a Custom (w/ ceramic magnet)? JB with shorter screws? Hex screws?

I usually prefer hotter pickups... and I play high gain modded Marshall's.

I JUST put a distortion in one of my Strats and it is not at all like the ones in my Gibsons.

I think possible screwing the pickup into the body might help because I have a Hello Kitty Strat that I tricked out and the distortion is screwed in and it sounds amazing.

Good luck with your search. I'm really curious to find out what you end up with.

Just out of curiosity, what are you doing with all the pickups that aren't working out for you?

Sorry it wasn't presented better... I tried the stock JB as well as with an A2 and A8

Lucy Diamond... I have about 30 loose pickups that I try out whenever I get a new guitar. I'm probably going to have a fire sale soon...

Psychodave, you really really must try the Super Distortion and the Full Shred. Both of them, actually.

I think you did a clip of a Cameron modded 1959 with the red Charvel, didn't you?

Good memory. I did almost every Cameron clip with that guitar. I've recently considered selling it since it is not used as much. FWIW, I'm not referring to that guitar in this thread though. I have 4 other Charvels and they all have different pickups... I'm trying to finalize the last one which seems to be the most difficult.

FWIW a really strong magnet in a weak wind will have enough output to still do some really high gain stuff. IMO a really weak (<8k) wind with an A8 magnet would be a really nice pickup for shred and metal stuff. Jazz neck in the bridge with A8? The low wind will bring some treble to the party which is good for an A8 magnet. Don't flame me please haha. Just an idea.

I also like the idea of active pickups like the blackouts.

Hey psychodave, I'm wondering: What was wrong with the JB and Distortion in your superstrat? The reason I ask is because I have a Warmoth swamp ash/maple top strat that I was thinking about upgrading with one of those pickups.

I thought the JB was really loose on the bottom and and mids were really honky. The Distortion seemed blurry sounding.
