Can't find any replacement speakers that fit my specs

Okay I've recently picked up an excellent Marshall DSL 5 watt Combo Amp that is working out nicely. All tube with a 10 inch. I would like to upgrade the speaker with something better. I'm looking for a speaker that has a bit more fullness and bass response, preferably with a pretty smooth treble. No ice-pick or aggressive high-end.

It needs to be 16 ohm too. That's where the problem is.

I can't seem to locate much of anything that is both a 10 inch and also 16 ohm. Except the Greenback G10 and some speaker by Eminence called Legend.

I read many great things about the Eminence Ramrod. Supposedly has a bigger more fuller sound which I am looking for, but I can't find a 16 ohm version of it.

Am I greatly limited here or can you give me some suggestions?

If a guy buys a speaker that says Warehouse Guitar Speakers, that is probably the sound you're gonna get. I have much higher standards.

Wow, not sure if you meant it that way, but that response sounds rude as hell...

Not sure if it's up to your "standards", but there's a 10" Celestion GreenBack that gets solid reviews: LINK

There's also a Gold version with Alnico mags: LINK

In all fairness to many people who post to say they don't care for particular speakers, many of those guys have not taken the time to break-in and loosen the cone suspension that allows the speaker to really open up. Anything with a coil exhibits this feature pickups, transformers, etc. I take speaker reviews with a grain of salt dependent upon this factor.

A friend of mine purchased a used Fender 65' Super Reverb RI combo that someone had installed WGS 10"s in. I didn't personally care for them BUT, then again they may not have been fully broken in which could've been the seller's reasoning for unloading said amp. Sound's ludicrous but, I had a friend who rather than maintenance his tube amps with filter caps (and/or) tubes, he'd just trade said amps away. Now that's lazy and costly.

higher standard lmao. why not make the amp 12"? a little bit of routing and drilling.. or is that not good enough your highness? getting what you want is almost impossible without a 12" speaker.

A DSL 5 is a nice amp, but you are limited in that regard. The sound typically associated, and what players usually strive for, with the DSL series usually means 12" and multiples at that.

Not saying it's impossible. Just tricky.

May I recommend a very different answer? I hope you're strapped in...

If sound quality is your number one priority, then consider that your DSL5C has a speaker out jack that wraps back into the internal speaker. You could buy a 1x12 and load it with any 16Ω speaker on the planet. If money is no object, the MX series 112 ($250) is not a poorly constructed cab and made for the DSL series. Then, if you don't like the Seventy/80, you can pop in a "full size" V30, Greenback, Eminence, Jensen, Weber, or whatever you prefer. Of course, it's like a $400 solution, but again, if it's the sound that's the number 1 priority...

Now, if you REALLY want to get goofy and have even more money: You can replace the stock speaker with an 8Ω 10" Greenback (or you could use a bright Jensen almost like a tweeter). Then you get a 1x12 and load it with a 12" 8Ω speaker that compliments it. (I like the G12M + G12H combo for my sound, despite the sensitivity diff). So then you buy a few jacks, a project box, and some speaker wire and rig up a series connection for the two speakers. So in the end, you plug your amp into the box, plug the combo and ext cab speakers into the box, and now you have a pair (10" + 12") of speakers with a very customized flavor.

I had an extensive speaker evaluation project once, and during this I'd tied 4 1x12 cabs together in this fashion, mimicking the series-parallel wiring in a 4x12 cab.

Just to be clear, I wasn't criticizing you. It was the OP's response to your recommendation that sounded a bit off-putting to me. Your posts have been great.

Hey no, I know you weren't and that you were only responding to 357mag. I was just saying normally I might react in kind but, I have to remember the speaker break-in issue which most people don't even consider before doing a speaker review or making such a comment.

Re: Can't find any replacement speakers that fit my specs

DSL5 combo amp: $499
Tone Tubby Alnico 10 speaker: $259
Knowing you've got the best sounding, most expensive 10" low-wattage tube amp in your neighborhood: PRICELESS!

tedweber.com

they make amazing speakers. I'd say maybe a British style 10", possibly with a hemp cone to roll off aggressive high end.

Re: Can't find any replacement speakers that fit my specs

If you judge WGS speakers by their brand name, you're overlooking a well-made and well-regarded line.

Re: Can't find any replacement speakers that fit my specs

I wouldn't do the re-drilling and surgery on the amp route. Picking up an external 1 x 12 is a plausible idea. Yeah that is the only thing about low wattage amps which is kind of a downside. The fact that you aren't gonna get a 12". But I would have had to get the DSL15 Combo just to get a 12", and that is too much power and it would have cost more, so I stuck with the smaller 5 watt version.

Weber speakers are pretty good. I've used the Silver Bell in the past. I'll keep the G10 Greenback in mind also.
