Can't make a choice between both Prails for my SG !!!

Ok guys !

I've never had a P90 loaded guitar and as an humbucker guy, looks like a Prail would be a good choice to have a "best of both world" kinda pickup and more important, an introduction to the P90 world.

I have a 2013 70's tribute SG in which I'd like to put those Prails.

There's only one neck version, so that one is sorted.

As for the bridge position, I'm hesitating between standard Prail and Hot Prail.

I'm looking to wire those as split with regular push/pull, I just need a P90 position and a humbucker position, but as I have other guitars, I'd probably stick more on the P90 position anyway.

As far as P90 goes, I look up to players like early Tonny Iommi, Pete Townsend with P90 SG or Bruce Franklin from Trouble.

For the band context, it would be for some thick stoner and classic rock.

The hot is super hot. Even the standard is super hot in series......almost un-tamable superhot. Its at least like a PAF pickup in parallel.

Re: Can't make a choice between both Prails for my SG !!!

Yeah, I've never once thought to myself "I wish this standard P-Rail was just a little bit hotter"!

Yeah and of course the most important thing here would be to get a true P90 tone.

Re: Can't make a choice between both Prails for my SG !!!

Well, if you are like Tony Iommi and use tiny strings and play very softly, the Hot version might work. I think you'd be fine with the regular version, though.

A good combo is a P90 in the neck position and an HB in the bridge position. This is a great setup.

I'm not a P90 guy and I Choose a set of Duncan '59 SH-1 for my liitle SG Special, she sounds fantastic !

I have a set of regular P-Rails in my SG and the bridge is plenty hot. My only suggestion is to use Triple Shots as all 4 sounds really are usable.

None of the P-Rails I've installed for people sounded good with both coils in series. Too hot/muddy. Not too bad in parallel though. I also think the two halves of the pickup sound too much alike. Interesting idea, but it doesn't do anything for me.

My first decent electric was a Sekova LP Custom copy. At some point I put a patent label HB at the bridge and a P-90 from a mid 70's SG, which I rewound to 60's specs, at the neck. That was a great sounding combination.

Re: Can't make a choice between both Prails for my SG !!!

My reasoning would be that you're not getting the prails for their series tone. The hot bridge could be a good option. It's A8 and the regular one is A5. Which mag would you like? Also 22k isn't that much divided between 2 coils that you want to get good sounds out of with true splits. What would that be? Like 12k for the P90 and 10 for the rail? That ain't that hot. That's exactly on the lower end of output that I like for my bridge pickups.

Re: Can't make a choice between both Prails for my SG !!!

I say, if you are going to do P-Rails, then do P-Rails full out. Not just P-90. You pay for the whole thing, may as well use it all.

Posted for the little switches ... if you gotta drill, you gotta drill. :D

Re: Can't make a choice between both Prails for my SG !!!

i use the normal bridge in my prs se and i like it a lot. neck & bridge set with triple shots and its great.

Re: Can't make a choice between both Prails for my SG !!!

Get a P Rail Hot for the bridge and the regular for the neck and then add a set of Triple Shots. Can do series, parallel, and coil splits in both directions and if you decide that series is way too much for you, then just keep it in parallel.

Re: Can't make a choice between both Prails for my SG !!!

the tone is very different in parallel than series even with the hot model

Re: Can't make a choice between both Prails for my SG !!!

Get a standard bridge, if you need to go hotter, swap in A8 magnets.

Exactly ditto!

My P-Rails are easily my hottest set of pickups... to the point that I lowered them to get them under control. Until I did that, I had trouble getting clean cleans, and it's still my loudest guitar. Frankly, I've never seen the point of of the hotter bridge version.

That said, I love 'em. Personally, I kinda like the thick series sound.

This is exactly opposite of my experience with them... the rails and P-90s are VERY different from one another.

Re: Can't make a choice between both Prails for my SG !!!

I have the hot in my Strat, yeah it is hot but I play metal. The rails and the P90 mellow the tone out for me a bit. I have a three-way mini toggle no triple shots.

Have P-Rails in an SG. Never use the middle switch position, both together are way too much for me. Have set up for split (P90 neck, rail bridge) with push pulls, find I use the P90 neck setting about 75% of the time and the rail bridge about 10%. Don't know why but the rail bridge doesn't really have a lot of kick to it.

I had forgotten you had that one... didn't you end up hunting around for those covers and finally finding some that just snapped on? Pretty cool...

...and yeah, I can see the hot bridge for metal. Being a classic rock guy, I sometimes forget to look beyond my own genre!
