Can't play one, need thoughts

Re: Can't play one, need thoughts

I've been following Epi since they moved to continental China, and the newest production models (2009 and up) are finally up to par if not better than the korean ones.

Their HB p'ups are still the muddiest stock p'ups to be found anywhere in the world and they're still wired with the thinniest wire you can find anywhere IN THE GALAXY.

+1. I like the Chinese Epi's better than the Korean. From what I've seen, the Koreans from the 1990's were pretty inconsistent. And yeah, what are they thinking with those PU's? Who in God's name thought of cramming all that wax in them? Better PU's would definitely increase sales. Since I swap PU's in everything, it doesn't matter to me, but it would to the average player.

Overall, I haven't played an Epi Custom that sucked. Don't know that I've played any great ones either.

Also, almost EVERY Epi have ever played (and owned) sounded way better with Duncans. PG will be awesome. C5...depends, but is a mag swap away froma CC if it lacks mids and is too bright, or a Custom if it needs booty and highs.

I really can't think of a reason not to give it a shot. Setup is an issue - but that can be seriously adjusted for free. If it sucks - you can probably sell it for enough to make it a Duncan purchase at a discount.

Hit it. And Pics. And buy with a "No regret" policy. I rarely endorse purchase without physical contact for guns or guitars.

Re: Can't play one, need thoughts

you already answered your own question.

Exactly! Yeah, Ive heard Agiles can be very good and many say they are better than Epis.. BUT, keep in mind, there is ALOT of EPI bias in forums.. People LOVE to bash them.. A great playing Epi, Can be a great guitar. So, if you have played it, and gel with it, then you KNOW what you are getting. That price is great, esp with the updates and case..

Re: Can't play one, need thoughts

c'mon just get the epi now and buy an agile later to put a different duncan set in.
That's what I did. why have just one LP?

Re: Can't play one, need thoughts

Play the Epi in the store if it sounds good and feels good and you really take to it,buy it and play it,$300 is a nice price. If you play it you'll know for sure what your getting, were as an Agile you'll be buying from online or somewere and who know if your getting a good one or that you will evan like agiles.

Called and got the serial number today and looked it up, is a 2004 Korean (Inchon) made Epi. Don't know if that makes a difference or not. Am going to go back in tomorrow and play it again some more, see if it's something I want to do or not.

Main thing with the Agile is that the AL-3000 is only about $150 more for a better finish, is mahogany with mahogany neck and true maple cap (don't know the exact construction on the Epi, but would be surprised if it were the same), and that price includes case. Don't have that much to spend right now, but if I buy the Epi now, I know I won't be getting anything else again for quite a while, so want to make sure I like it well enough to keep it for a long time.

Re: Can't play one, need thoughts

Just spent about an hour-and-a-half sitting down with it again, plugged it into a couple different amps, did as much as I could with it, and as much as I want another electric right now, even at $300 there's other things I should be spending money on... my truck needs brakes, am trying to move and could use the extra towards a deposit on a new apt... maybe soon, but there'll be other guitars out there when it's time.

Maybe I will hold out for that rootbeer Agile or do a Warmoth partscaster that I can do Johnny Cash and get it one piece at a time. Thanks for all the input and thoughts, I still think it's a good deal, just not the best time.

Just glad I took the time to think it all through, was about to go back and buy it a couple of times this weekend!
