capacitor value

Re: capacitor value

The usual is .047 for single coils and .022 for humbuckers, with the reason being that with single coils you might want to roll off even more treble.

In practice I find .047 to result in muddy tone on all pickup types. I prefer .022 for humbuckers and either .022 or .033 for single coils.

Re: capacitor value

.022 uF and .047 uF are the most common stock caps. Usually, those are used for humbuckers and Fender single coils, respectively. I prefer starting at .01 uF and going down from there as needed, as I usually find both .047 and .022 too muddy when the pot is on 0. However, go to .01 or lower, and you get some great cocked wah sounds on 0.

Re: capacitor value

Like most, I like the .022 on the HB and .047 on the single coils. If you aren't sure, solder some alligator clips and leads onto a selection of caps and try them by clipping them into place and playing.
If you want to keep the tone consistent as you lower the volume, you can use a tone circuit between the in and out terminals on the Volume pot. There are several ways to do this but my favorite is to us a 100K resistor and a .001uf Cap soldered in parallel.
The first pic is a cap on test leads. The second is the 100k and .001 cap tone circuit that keeps the highs from bleeding off as you lower the volume. You can wire that on test leads as well if you want to try before you buy.

Re: capacitor value

I like 0.022 in the bridge and 0.015 in neck.

I only like 0.047 with really, really bright pickups like Fender CS69s.

Agreed, I use brighter caps for necks too.

Neal Mosers favorite is a .0047. Please note the DOUBLE 0. I love that one too, as well as the cocked wah sound of .0033 (once again double 0). Most Varitones use double 0's, single 0's are too muddy, ofcourse most varitones don't have a pot so they are all full blast.
