car paint

my daughter bought a new car and i just noticed that the color might look killer on a guitar (for some reason i'm thinking an SG). i know you can use car paint quite successfully, but i don't know how you get the right quantity, or even how much you need for a guitar. the dealership sells touch-up bottles, but not pints. anyone know where you can get it in pints or even quarts?

You can get quarts, just look for an automotive paintsupplier in the yellow pages.

Yep, or as close as they will get. Factory paint formulas are listed so they can be matched anywhere. So if you know the year/model/make of the particular vehicle that you loved the color of the store can match perfectly.

One note though, the catalist hardeners in automotive paint is VERY toxic and must be respected at all times with good ventilation, a charcol filtered mask, etc.. It is much more critical with this type of paint than others.

good point.... i used all that protective gear and was spraying outside only as well.. i have a few spray guns with line filters on them and i do all my spraying outside.. but the body i sprayed with auto paint stank up the basement for months even after it had dried... it smelled bad and i had hung the body to cure down there but had done the real spraying outside.... the whole basement was a right off for a long time..


I found even with Auto primer on the wood before i sprayed the body it still peels off easy....

Go to a local automotive paint/body shop ,they have all the formulas for any car out there , and yes many will sell you a pint. My buddy works at a body shop and has painted atleast 3 guitars for another friend. You might even get a good deal on them doing a nice professional job for you, I saw 2 of the guitar bodys in the shop and the finish was awsome,autobody guys seem to love painting things other than autos, those guitars were tha talk of the shop while they were there

Body shops are good... so are the bike shops, which IMO tend to be a little hipper if you want pinstripes or something kinda trick done...

Maybe it's just 'cause I have friends who ride scooters. The 'outcast' element...

Dupont used to design the paint Fender used in the 1950's and 1960's and Fender got the idea from the racy car paint jobs of the era. Sounds like a great idea. Might want to email Dan Erlewine at Stewmac for assistance.

i tried the spray bomb route and found the stuff was way too thin.... too much solvents and not enough solids.. only seems to be good for EVH inspired paint jobs where you expect it to wear thin

It might be a better deal to prepare your guitar and take it to a body shop. The last quart of car paint I bought was $160.00. You don't need that much unless you are painting 50 guitars..

Too true, auto paint is VERY expensive.

I believe the paint # is printed on a label on the inside of the drivers door somewhere. I think this varies by manufactuer.

For those of you that have got an axe painted by a local body shop, does the paint job hold up really well on wood? This might give me a great idea.
