Careful, you could put out an eye with that thing.

Pointy build!

So I have this Charvel model series neck that I needed to do something with. I was out on a Soloist or San Dimas shape build, so it just sat until inspiration struck.

Heat gun and elbow grease to remove headstock veneer.

New nut blank fits snug :D

What about the rest of the neck you say?

Binding and inlays perhaps?

Yep, these are metal enough :headbang:

I had to make some adjustments to the intended body.

What the heck? The first layout did not work with the Charvel style cavity cover, so plug and redrill. The wiring channels were routed and then capped.

Neck pocket gap that needs to be dealt with. The tail stop holes are drilled for 25.5" scale, but the neck pocket holes are slightly off from the factory neck.

Some epoxy wood putty makes for a perfect fit.

One can never have too many clamps.

I will tighten up the routes once I scrape out the glue.

Frenched in the jack plate. I thought about something more modern, but this is how it would have been done in the '80's (over just a flat plate)

Final depth on the cavities

... to be continued.

Sorry for the delay, but life sometimes gets in the way.

I experimented with wood dyes and stains, but the tinted Watco looked the best.

I complete some fit/finish things today, set the neck pocket angle, and started the final finishing.

The next time you see it, all done. (I hope :D)

**** man, at first I was like 'oh no's don't do that to that neck' ... then I realized it was you, scrolled down, and currently have a grin on my face. Can't wait to see this come together. Great work as always.

Hopefully the govt doesn't come raid your shop for wood certs :)

Looks great.

Re: Careful, you could put out an eye with that thing.

Wow, you're really turning out some great stuff these days!

Ayrton, you really are a master.

Where do you get your flamed maple cap?

Re: Careful, you could put out an eye with that thing.

I got sidetracked with an emergency refret so the explorer is in a holding pattern for a couple days. I hope to have an update for you this weekend.

Doc, I got the cap from Northridge Hardwoods. They were able to get me a bookmatched top that was large enough without being a paper thin veneer.

I dub thee : Jed Clampett

Dude, you are almost building my dream guitar!!! My dream guitar is an Explorer shape, pointy headstock, triple pup. My preferences would be a set neck, a black or purple quilt top and maybe a floyd.

Great work!! It amazes me how you guys can flll in channels/holes etc..

Re: Careful, you could put out an eye with that thing.

How come the body has so many splits, I didn't see you do anything that would justify that...

The top too (but that was hidden under the veneer) but especially the back. Was it from the pressure from the routing?

Other than that, amazing job as always :headbang:
