Carvin Amps

Re: Carvin Amps

I've questioned this once also, but its regarding the Carvin Nomad 40.

They said that Carvin amps ain't compared to the Marshalls with exception to the Legacy.

Re: Carvin Amps

I'd check out the new V3 or Legacy. Most of the others have good cleans but the OD channels sound like wet cardboard.

When I was 18, I made the mistake of buying an X100B and hated it SO much.
I tried to sell it, and when a potential buyer came over, it started acting up, and he passed on it. I was so angry, I took it outside and swung it above my head by the power cord, and smashed it against the side of my garage, and threw it in a dumpster. LOL

Re: Carvin Amps

Is it the same line of amps that my Carvin X-60 is? If so, it has nice cleans and suckass distortion! :)

Re: Carvin Amps

What about carvin MTS amps? They've got an MTS 3200 at a local used store that I was looking at...sounds pretty good, distortion channel may be a bit much, but the half power switch is nice.. anyone have opinions/facts/incidents with them?

Re: Carvin Amps

MTS's have diode distortion- sounds bad. Go for a Legacy or the new V3. The Xamps sound great if you get one with EL-34's capable of awesome cleans and great distortion.

Re: Carvin Amps

X-100B's would sound alot better with an od infront to tighten things up a bit I reckon. They are bloody LOUD too!

GJ: You swung a freakin 20kg HEAD by the power cord?!?! HAHAHA!!!

Re: Carvin Amps

The X-100B is a decent amp. I've had mine for over 10 years and it's served me well. I had some recent trouble but it wasn't anything more than the creeping crud....so a good cleaning and I was back in business.

The cleans are LOUD, tight, weighty and bold with not so much breakup as my Fender Pro Reverb. The Fender seems to have a bit more chime. The reverb is good but does not quite get you into surf territory. I use a Boss GT-6 and a half dozen stop boxes including two TS9's. The Carvin clean accepts the modeled amp sounds very well. The clean channel handles singles and humbuckers well...does not play favorites.

The EQ is active and allows for lots of range.

The distortion channel is serviceable enough. It has two gain modes that I'd call "regular" and "x-gain / scooped mid."

It's has a seperate 5 band EQ that can be applied to either channel but alas is not footswitch friendly.

IIRC I paid about 950 for the head and a 4x12. It was a good deal...about 90 bucks a year so far.

Re: Carvin Amps

If you go with a X-100 make sure you get the footswitch and if distortion is your thing get the later models with EL-34's. I've got the XV-212 and it's my favorite amp and I only payed $250 for it!!!!!!!

Re: Carvin Amps

If our handy with a soldering Iron you can pull the diodes in the MTS circuit and jumper the open circuit, this really takes the harshness out of the crunch channel and smoothes it out - however no carvin will come close to an early 80's verticle input JCM800 in tone.

Re: Carvin Amps

I have a Legacy and maaaaan lemme tell you that thing has grown on me! Love it!

I gave the V3 a nice loud go at the Carvin Santa Ana store and its quite impressive... could definitely thrown down with a triple rec any day.
