Carvin California Carved Top ??

Re: Carvin California Carved Top ??

I forgot to ask about the TUNG OIL NECK, do any of the members here have one on any guitar ? & do you like or dislike, i'm thinking of getting the tung O neck -but have never had the chance to try one, IS there any special care (mantinence) with it...thanks, rammer

Re: Carvin California Carved Top ??

Rammer I've tung oiled a couple of necks, there really isn't any special care, just wipe it down - nice thing about tung oil is it's easy to repair any finish problems, light steel wool, a quick application of tung oil and a good rub in will usually result in a nice, light matt finish. Putting on several coats will add more luster and make the finish more glossy. I used tung on a couple of strat necks with very good results, but I like a matt finish neck more than a high gloss poly type finish (my hands tend to stick to the glossy poly finishes). Anyhow, good luck on your purchase - I didn't mean to sound like I was bagging on Carvin (contrary to Kent's last post) but you asked what people liked and disliked about the guitars and I was just trying to give my honest opinion. I've owned an SC90 and a bolt in the past and they were great guitars and priced right where they should be. take care

Re: Carvin California Carved Top ??

I suggest the satin finish neck. It's not on the price list but is available. I have it on my DC127 with a mahogany neck and like it much better than the gloss finished neck. I was advised not to get tung oil on a mahogany neck due to mahogany's softer nature. Just my experience.

Re: Carvin California Carved Top ??

RIFFRAFF , THANKS & no problem , i asked for opinions & you gave me yours, that is all i can ask for.. i did not expect everyone to love carvin, i know that to some people carvin is just carvin,i never used to even give them a second look,(no offence meant to carvin owners) but the CCT catches my eye & to be able to order the options that i want & receive it in 7 weeks for a little less than $1300,w/ hard case, well i think i'm going to try one, the worst that i will lose will be the shipping $20 each way = $40 (+ the anxiety of waiting) & for anyone that thinks that i'm trying to get a cheaper PRS, i have a CUST 24, & yes it is a nice guitar, but there are things that i dont like #1 the binding #2 the neck is a little too wide, i will keep it, but also will look at other makes also, i like the body style , it is copied after a ( modified) LPJR double cut( take a look at the santana) no matter what PRS or any one else that makes this style says........i just have to make up my mind on the neck finish & will order monday.... BTW, i have 4 new cts 500 pots 2 x SD SH6 & some orange drops(thanks BLACKROSE) just itching to be installed in something ... AGAIN THANKS EVERYONE ... rammer

Re: Carvin California Carved Top ??

Ya a lot of people like to rag on Carvin. Sometimes people have strong opinions and often ignore the facts. Despite using the finest materials available some people still put them in the category of cheap mahogany, photo finish top guitars. :fing25: Hey their loss. I'll continue to buy a guitar made of the highest quality materials for half the price ;) Just to give a balanced alternative opinion I have never experienced a scratchy pot on any Carvin I have owned or played. I have a recently purchased CT6 and love the neck. It is not too thick and not too thin. I was trying to find a post for you that I saw. It said that the neck was very comparable to the PRS standard neck. To my hands and fingers I would say that is pretty accurate. Of the guitars I own and have played it's my favorite neck. By the way, what type of pickups are you looking to put in yours? I went with a Jazz in the neck and a Distortion in the bridge, trembucker version of course ;) Even though I went with the distortion pickup, my particular setup gives me a pretty wide range of sounds that I can cop. LOVE THE GUITAR! I personally don't think you can go wrong. :headbang:

Re: Carvin California Carved Top ??

I have a Carvin CT3M. I love everything about it. Sounds and feels as good or better than all of the gibsons and prs guitars I've played. They are very underpriced if you ask me.

Re: Carvin California Carved Top ??

I have a tung oil finish and love it... no stickiness and it is easy to work with/live with.
