Carvin guitars

Re: Carvin guitars

I'm in the middle of assembling one of their alder bolt-on bodies... I'll let you know.

Re: Carvin guitars

This is where the Carvin brand is damaged-------clueless chowderheads dreaming up cheeseball designs that very few people like. Lots of these abominations end up in circulation, cementing the reputation of Carvin in the minds of some as mostly ugly guitars, when they can of course be very beautiful if well spec'd. Hardly any professional guitar manufacturer would mass produce some outrageously flamed glossy purple guitar with bright gold hardware for example. And getting your name on the truss cover? Do these people wear Hulk Hogan Halloween costumes while playing these creations? Can you get any cheesier? :(

Wait . . .

Glossy flamed purple with gold hardware sounds pretty awesome to me honestly . . .

I'm not a fan of purple either, but if people see Carvin as a damaged brand because of some of the offered options...

I don't know what to say to that type of thinking.

Actually, not to be contradictory but I LOVE purple guitars, my no.1 axe was custom ordered in a purple-ish Midnight Blue shade that, depending on lighting appears either blue or purple.
I've also seen Carvin's purple hue and it is stunning, their blue as well.

Yeah, can't remember how many times I've played with their custom options, I think I might have a dozen or so builds somewhere in my hard drive, from DC135s/DC127s, DC400s, DC600s and ST300s to less usual ones for me like TL60s, CT624s and CS624s.
I do believe I've GASed for Carvin more than any other guitar that I've never got.

Right about now I'd love a DC600 or the new beveled single cut.

Only thing that's stopping me really is that I need a new guitar like I need another hole in my pocket. I already got more than I can play...

Re: Carvin guitars

If you're talking about the "too many guitars" part, yeah, I still get plenty of GAS attacks but my wallet is the deciding factor. Can't really justify it, plain and simple.

Hey, I see you're from the *other* Athens.

Cool!

Re: Carvin guitars

One of 'em, yup. :D

IIRC, there's also one in Ohio... probably a few other states, as well...

Re: Carvin guitars

DC400 Purple flame.
ST300 Blackburst quilt.
'89 DC127 ST body pearl yellow.
'89 DC200 ST body original deep pearl blue.
DC727 Pearl White.
'11 Ford Mustang GT/CS Performance white. ;)

I personally love Purple/Gold goodness. :D

Re: Carvin guitars

I ordered a Carvin C66 about 3 years ago and it's great. The neck is the most stable I have experienced and I live in New England, where the air goes from cold and dry to extremely hot and humid at the drop of a hat. I have had to tweak the truss rod once, I can not say the same for my other PRS, Dean, Custom Mike Lipe, Ibanez, Fender and Gibson guitars. Great people to work with and they'll do a lot of custom work if you ask. I was curious if they'd do a 3 single coil C66 and they said they would, it'd just be a slight price hike. The unplugged tone of my Carvin is also stunning, rich and bright, plugged in, it has a very juicey upper mid attack and just pops like no other. I tried a Frank Gambali model when I was out in LA and immediately fell in love with it. That will be my next Carvin for sure.

YUMBO-JUMBO

My little carvin all alone, No friend and unloved. One day i am going to give it that much needed love, It always seems to get pushed back behind projects. And i dont know why because it is a seriously nice guitar.

Re: Carvin guitars

No, you just have a choice of radius- 10, 12 or 14 inch. And choice of fret size and material, but Carvin has no compound radius option.

Late '03 through part of '04 Carvin guitars did have a 12"-16" compound radius fretboard. Short lived. Was not very popular. Then the CT came out. Shortly after they switched to the 12" radius standard. 14" and 10" were options. Now the 14" is standard and 10" and 12" are options.

Prior to the compound fretboard, the fretboards were a 15" radius.

Re: Carvin guitars

I don't know what they are like now...but I do know that my bandmate's '84 Carvin (some sort of LP Jr. double-cut type thing with humbuckers) is one of the best built guitars I've ever played.

I've drooled over the C66 since they came out.. Only prob is, if I order just one Carvin, I want a neck thru.

Re: Carvin guitars

Also, all Carvins use cheap switches and pots- no excuse at those prices.

Also my experience. Solid build, good woods, nice design, but lousy electronics and rusty screws. Also instead of their own pups they might start to offer better SD or DMZ or EMG pups. Frankly the Carvin pups are not up to the expectations of a pro player.

Frankly the old wood spacer mesh shield M22's from the 80's -90's in particular sounded great still have a couple loose here . My Pink 90 X220C still has the factory M22SD and N set in it as well as all the stock pots, switches and even the jack. Never a problem with anything electronic in the guitar and it has seen a LOT of stage use over the last 24 years.
Carvin pickups do have their own thing going but I always got great tones with them.
