Carvin Pickups

Re: Carvin Pickups

Zhang like I said, I loved the 4 screw idea, the 3 screw idea looks retarded and the mounting rings will require an extra hole drilled into the bass side. At least with the older bezels, 2 extra holes would be drilled (between the 2 existing holes) and it would look balanced. And yes, I am that picky.

Re: Carvin Pickups

The 4 screw adjustment was a feature that I liked while I had a M22SD. I also had two of the stacked single coils that were dark and lifeless.

3 is more logical, one side could end up with one of the screws sticking up in the air, requiring an extra unnecessary adjustment.

Re: Carvin Pickups

I can't speak first hand about them, but my Daddio use to play Carvin (basses) and he would always say,"the bass was built well, but the pickups are turd". Don't know if that helps. Just throwin my 2 cents in. Now my Daddio only uses Seymour Duncan pickups, mainly the Blackouts for Bass. I hear him always talking highly about them. You can check my Daddio out at www.jugulur.com

I've owned old Carvin pickups with 4 screws and that's never happened. You'd have to purposely try to do that to make it happen, come on now...

Re: Carvin Pickups

Uh, I still think the 3 screws look really off-set and weird. But the pups, in my ears, sound good! : private:

Yeah even if they sounded like God I'd be hard pressed to get them based on the look, it just feels wrong... Sometimes I'm a little too much like Adrian Monk.

Re: Carvin Pickups

The Carvin pups I've used are fantastic. Some of the best humbuckers ever. They were the C22B (I think - around 13K) and the PAF style C22 which does nail the PAF tone, maybe sweeter.
Get past the brand names and you'll see how good these are.

+1. I like mine a lot; I have C22's and M22's. Very nice tones. I think what works against them is that they have a small PU line (that is gradually expanding), and people don't think they're serious about PU's, but they are. They're reasonably-priced and you can get them used for $30 or less. Why would anyone buy an Asian HB when you can get a used Carvin for the same price?

Re: Carvin Pickups

I have an M22SD (circa:1984!)
The tone is fantastic, but it's a bit microphonic & sensitive to noise.

DC: 13.9k, Alnico 5. -- Don't know resonant peak.

Anybody have a suggestion for a Seymour Duncan that would have a similar tone, but better performance?

(Also what would be a good choice for a middle p/u between 2 M22s in an HSH Strat?)

Re: Carvin Pickups

This is interesting 'cause I just got a CS6C (their 'Les Paul' surrogate but with a Floyd).
I went up to their store in Sacramento and played one with the C22 pickups, and thought they were really sterile sounding. But loved the guitar itself. So, I ordered mine with the M22T and M22V; pickups I've known from other Carvins I've had over the years.
In this guitar, they are lifeless. Last guitar I had with those pickups was a DC135 with alot of maple in it. Sounded good in it.
So my CS6C is now in the shop getting a C4 (I have a bunch of other mags from Wymore though). I have been using a CC in my main guitar for years. LOVE that pickup.
So for me, LOVE Carvin rides, HATE the electronics. Oh, yeah, stupid Tele-style gnurled knobs on a quasi-Gibson-looking ride? Dumber than dirt! Those are also being changed to amber bell knobs, which means, arrgghh, changing the solid shaft pots too.
Dang it, I'm gonna get this guitar right if it kills me.

All that said, it seems Carvin pickups, from my experience do well in bright (read:Maple) guitars. Go figure; most of their model line is neck-through.

How do you think the M22T would sound in an Alder or Ash body? Okay for metal?

Re: Carvin Pickups

I REALLY like the Holdsworth's...the others didn't thrill me. To be fair...that could be the whole dynamic between the body and the PUP's.

Re: Carvin Pickups

I tried some C22s a while ago...

they sounded pretty good, I was suprised, I got a pair for $40 shipped and they sounded similar to 59s.

Re: Carvin Pickups

i only have experience with the c22 series. are the c22's bad pups? absolutely not. are they as good as duncan or dimarzio............. that's all opinion but i am gonna say no but not far from them. i am gonna say they are between GFS and duncan leaning more towards the duncan side. like 75 duncan 25 GFS out of 100

Yeh, I can see the stacked singles in your avatar, but they don't look very dark or lifeless. :eyecrazy: :banana: I guess we all have our own opinions. :naughty: To each, his own. :lmao:
