Carvin Tube 100/Marshall JMP-1 clip (rock bottom)

DankStar

Her Little Mojo Minion
Finally did a quick clip of the carvin tube 100 - a couple of riffs from UFO's rock bottom (definitely played wrong). I didn't really use this setting in the past on the jmp-1, but it's been my go-to with the carvin. It's a preset ("Angus-Ho"), but I should at some point try to dial it in to match my playing and the setup I've got going. Speaker is a v30. Strat with Duncan '59.

EDIT: see post #4 for "shoot-out" with gsp 1101

is that the jmp1 preamp or the 1 watt jmp?

Re: Carvin Tube 100/Marshall JMP-1 clip (rock bottom)

Cool, man. I always wanted to try the JMP-1 but never got a chance. I just recently got another ADA MP-1 and love it. I love the V30. Had it in an H&K cab years ago. I am going with the WGS Veteran 30 in one of my combos because I'm on a budget, but The Vintage 30 has been one of my faves since I had that cab back in '93.

Re: Carvin Tube 100 - marshall tones shootout

It's the rack preamp. I'd like to revisit the ADA someday now that I've got a proper power amp.

Thought it might be fun to play the same riff through all the marshall settings I like on the digitech GSP 1101 with the same power amp, mic, and cab setup:

68 plexi (sounds pretty similar to the angus-ho on the jmp-1):

77 marshall (generally my favorite setting in the GSP):

Still, I am DIGGING on that preamp. Now thanks to that, I am going to have to find a JMP-1./

Re: Carvin Tube 100/Marshall JMP-1 clip (rock bottom)

Dig. Tight playing.

Slightly crispy (I've dealt with the crispies myself many times before)...

Are you using an SM57?

Try moving the mic just a *hair* away from the dustcap (where the crispies live and reside).

Re: Carvin Tube 100/Marshall JMP-1 clip (rock bottom)

Thanks! Yes sm57, I placed it dead center then listened and it was gross so I moved it over an inch or so and went with it. Probably should have gone a bit further.

Re: Carvin Tube 100/Marshall JMP-1 clip (rock bottom)

Nicely played! I thought the JCM800 setting sounded best. LLL is right though they did all sound a bit crispy/brittle.

Kind of a coincidence ....I just bought the 5cd re-issue pack that they have out (Phenomenon through to Obsession) last week...nice to finally have those on cd :)

Re: Carvin Tube 100/Marshall JMP-1 clip (rock bottom)

I heard mostly slag on that Marshall unit-there is a lot of destructive criticism on that unit JMP-1 pre.. saying it sucks cause it really is'nt tube or wahtever...sounds great to me,. I mean, ZZ top uses it.Would I buy one? Ahh HELL no!

Yeah, zz and maiden (I think priest too) are the most notable users. I don't know if the tubes (2 x 12ax7s) are doing much for the tone or not, and of course every setting isn't stellar, but it cops some cool marshall tones fairly well.

Re: Carvin Tube 100/Marshall JMP-1 clip (rock bottom)

The JMP-1 can cop nearly all the Marshall tones very convincingly, especially in a cranked rig with two 412's.
I had that rig in the early 90's, and kinda wish I'd at least kept that preamp.

Digitech....not so much, unless you use only it's FX with the JMP-1. I always hated the digital preamp tones Digitech is well known for.

Did you find a rack unit yet? I think I have an SKB 4 space roto rack I could sell.

Re: Carvin Tube 100/Marshall JMP-1 clip (rock bottom)

GJ: Still thinking on racks, but the 4 space might work if it's not too deep. Most of my gear is rather shallow. I think you may dig the gsp when hooked to the carvin and one of your killer cabs. I was goofing with some of the heavier tones lately - the dual recto + an 808 and the 5150 were sounding pretty sick!
