Thanks to the fellas here, I've narrowed my amp search down to two. I did try the EVH 5150 III 50 watt btw, and while it had a great sound, it just wasn't me. Both of these amps have the features I want, now it comes to tone. My main complaint about the V3 is that it seems to be a bit fizzy, although I hear that proper dialing-in and a tube swap from the stock sovteks to JJs will solve this. My complaint about the Legacy 3 is that I keep hearing it won't do metal (although I saw a demo of Brendon Small getting some wicked metal sounds, so I wonder if that's true). Also, confessedly, I can't help but hear the 80's creeping in to the distortion channels. Not necessarily a bad thing but...

I'd like to get the following tones from the amp I buy
- Killer Cleans
- Zeppelin
- AC/DC
- Hard Rock (Alice in Chains, etc)
- Alternative (Jimmy Eat World, etc.)
- Megadeth
- Smooth rich leads (like Sweet Child o' Mine)
- SRV Overdrive

Tall order I know, but I'd love some input from you guys, you haven't steered me wrong yet. Place your votes gents!

The Legacy III will do all that and more.

I've had an older V3 for a little while now and unfortunately, I haven't found any of those tones except the clean and a good classic rock type tone. That doesn't mean they're not in there; it means I hardly ever have time to play AND it's got so many switches and knobs I feel like a failed rocket scientist.

I've owned the v3. Yes putting jjs and biasing the amp help a lot. And I am sure u could do metal with the legacy if you hit the front end real hard. Especially if you have a overdrive with bass and treble controls. Or a overdrive and eq

JJ's and a good bias job seem to help MOST Carvins. They sound a little cold until you do.

Legacy + Overdrive + EQ will do metal no problem.

Damn, all this Legacy talk is making me wanna get another one as a backup head. I had a Legacy I and liked it a lot.

Re: Carvin V3 vs. Carvin Legacy 3

Well, if both amps gives you the same kindda genre you need,
I think I'd prefer the Carvin Legacy 3
cuz it sounds fiercer

well, thats me :)

Anyone else wanna chime in? BUMP!

Man.. do you live in australia? I have a laney ironheart and the 412 matching cab and I sell it both for 700 aud. Its flawless but I think the tube it came with are not the best tube for the amp. I can make you a vid review for it if you are interested

Re: Carvin V3 vs. Carvin Legacy 3

I owned and gigged a V3 for about 1-2 years when they first came out (because I couldn't afford a Dual Rec!).

From what I remember, it doesn't do medium gain tones well.

Load it up with 6L6s and it will go head to head with a Dual Rec and come off fairly decently in terms of high gain, and your clean tones will take a turn for the sparkly Fender territory too.
