What is the cab loaded with? I have an 80's cab with the 12M-70's that seem to generate a lot of hate on the internet. I love them

Re: Carvin X-100 Mods?

Do you have an older black tolex 6L6 version or a grey fuzzy with EL-34's?

The EL-34 version does a very good 80's/90's hot rodded Marshall sound but would need a boost
to get to today's hi-gain sounds.

With all the new pedals out today your best bet would be to boost it with them.

It's a Peavey cab loaded with Sheffield 1290's (GT-75 copies) probably the most hated speakers on the net. I've learned not to listen to most of the bs on the net because it's just that. These speakers sound great.

Blk Tolex 6L6 model...

Yeah, mebbe just get it back up & running for now...

Got some "Dirt" boxes, just haven't tried them w/that amp yet.

Re: Carvin X-100 Mods?

I like running my dirt boxes through the clean channel along with the onboard eq.

Re: Carvin X-100 Mods?

If you can get it up and running for less than two bills, I would think that worth it.
Been playing the crap out of mine for the last week since bringing it home from the practice space. Love it.

Re: Carvin X-100 Mods?

Not one of the "coveted" amps out there, but I cant help but want one.. Guess Im alil brainwashed from years of Carvin catalogs....
Must......buy..... amp......

no, but seriously, Id like to score one.. Carvin gets a lot of hate, but there are still a bunch of these amps out there keepin on, and they brought em back due to demand. Ive heard lots of guys speak highly of them.

Didn't know there was a 6l6 and el34 version. any recommendations tween the 2 if one day I go scouring the used wasteland??

Yeah,stupidly underrated.
They had 1 @ GC(newer,more gain,I'm sure) for about tree-fitty w/a roadcase...

Great platform, ran my Rocktron into it before I had/needed pedals.

Totally kicks ass,the low-end is amazing on these, even w/o teh EV...

Re: Carvin X-100 Mods?

I never cared for the drive channel on the older 6L6 versions very Fender Twin like clean channel, great for pedals.
The EL-34 version is perfect for me. Chimey cleans and a snarling beast on the other. It loves single coil Strats.

Re: Carvin X-100 Mods?

I have the X100b iv re-issue.
Great amp. I have it setup with 6L6's. Run it through my V3 4x12 cab with V30's.
That amps going nowhere.

Re: Carvin X-100 Mods?

I think they're very different amps. The V3 has a very modern sound. I always feel modern amps have a Hi Fi quality to them.
Where as the X100b is definitely old school 80's. That more organic coloring to it's sound. the V3 gain is more tight. The X100b more loose.
Both have very nice clean channels. V3 is more JC120-ish. X100b more Fender Twin-ish.

Re: Carvin X-100 Mods?

Been playing the crap (or like crap) out of my 80's XV 212 for the last two weeks. Twin Tube Mayhem has been my dirt pedal of choice, through the clean channel with the onboard eq. I also plugged in my closed 1x12 cab with a C-REX in it into the second output. The two speakers in the combo are one original 12M-70 and a Swamp Thang. It's set for full power and with the volume at 3, it's massive. Cleans sound great too.
