Case storage?

Hope this isn’t a dumb question, but I’m gonna ask.
I’m setting up a music room and going to mount my most played bass and guitar on the wall. Got Hercules hangers. The question is, is it harmful to leave cases outside (in a shed of course)?
I’m guessing prolly not too much (obviously a guitar, yes). I just wanted to make sure the FL heat wouldn’t break down the glue that holds the liner in or something of that nature. Thank you!!

On a serious side, exposure of humidity and night-day temperature changes can do an array of nasty stuff with your cases. It is best to store them somewhere inside the house.

Yes. The cases will end up warping.

Not trying to be a smart add, but this is another reason I love nice bags.

Thanks. This is what I was afraid of.. especially with my nice Taylor wood case. I’ll have to figure someth out. They won’t fit under the bed and my wife really wants em outta the house, but I sure don’t want em getting ruined

I'd make sure the inside of the case is really dry (maybe throw in some of those silica packs), and wrap/tape it up in a few garbage bags if it's going to be stored long time. Mildew is a death knell for guitar cases . . . the damned stuff is impossible to get the smell out.

That said, heat is not usually our problem up here in Canada.

I’d never store mine outside where you live. The heat and humidity will do a number on them.

I’m thinking of this in the basement when I get it all put back together.

Just to play devil’s advocate...

How often do you use the cases? If the answer is practically never, consider selling them and replacing with nice bags. The bags will hang in the closet, taking up very little room. Unless you’re shoving guitars into the back of a van with crap stacked on them, I don’t think a hardshell is necessary. Also, if you keep carry in a bag, you’re going to hang it on your shoulder as opposed to setting it down to be damaged or stolen.

I suggest keeping the guitars in the cases when not in the room. Start your session, open up the cases. During the session, hang them. You end your session, you put them in cases. It's not a hassle at all, and it ensures that both cases and guitars are stowed as they should be when not in use: guitar in case, case closed and latched, indoors, off the ground (in case of flood). Just keep your two most used guitars' cases on the outside of the stack.

YMMV. As little a hassle as it is to take a guitar out of the case, I've found that I will end up playing less when the guitars are stowed. If the guitar is there on a stand I'm much more likely to grab it during the day and spending a few minutes with it.

I keep all my guitars out all the time. A guitar that gets the occasional scratch or ding is infinitely better than one that goes unplayed.

I love that bread shelf idea.

OP, I think you and the Mrs. need to discuss things. Something isn't jiving here or I'm missing why she wants them out of the house. You both live there, guitars are your enjoyment. I hope all is OK.

Majority of my guitars are stacked on a shelf on my side of our closet (good side closet). I have two in the front of the house by my desk, one in the case and one on a stand, and another two in the cases against the wall in the closet (on my side). Everything is out of the way.

He's talking about a music room. Would he not be walking in to the room deliberately, solely to play music – not just happening to walk by and seeing a guitar, which might make him want to play it?

I have kept guitars next to the bed, simply for quick access for songwriting purposes. I keep a bass there now, in a gig bag. But that's more so I didn't forget things, not to encourage me to play.

I've never been discouraged from playing simply because a guitar was in a case. Nor have I been encouraged to play simply because one is sitting out. The frequency of play is really an issue of personal discipline, not how the guitars are kept.

I don't argue against leaving them out, period. Some people might like that. I do sometimes. I have a $2,200 Strat (though I didn't pay anywhere near that much) that's been on a Hamilton floor stand in my studio for over a month now, untouched because I have solely been playing bass lately...but I keep meaning to grab that Strat for a few minutes. I just don't think wall hangers are the greatest option. Hamilton floor stands are fool proof. Or those stands that fold out of Fender style hard cases and let you lean the guitars into them.

My number 1 guitar, a Custom Shop Esquire N.O.S. that I've had for over 16 years, has received terrible looking finish damage from being left next to my bed and having things dropped on it. I regret this damage now, Even though the guitar has literally scores of blemishes from being played out, I don't mind them. But I mind the ones that occurred from me being a lazy dumbass and keeping the thing out. At the time, I just wanted my favorite guitar nearby at all times. Now, I would at least keep it in a bag for the by the bed role, not on a stand.

There’s a difference between having guitars on a stand or hung in a room and leaving them places where they’re getting crap dropped on them.

you could get a new bed frame. Most should have room under. A sturdy metal bed frame is ~$50 on Amazon and you can fit 4 cases under there. It's probably the same cost as buying a shelf for the cases.

Thanks for the info. Ill check the bed.. I think its too low.. I KNOW the one in the guest room is as Ive tried hiding guitars there before.. haha.. This is an older house and is limited on closet and storage space. (indoors) And we have the closets pretty well packed. I have like 3 sheds outside.. I really dont wanna put them outside and expose to damage.. As far as hanging them.. I like having them hung up, but never really planned on it as I have always babied my guits, tried to keep them dust free and all. BUT.. part of her vision for setting up this music room is for me to mount a guitar and bass on the wall and my accou on a stand. Kinda as decor and convenience. So.. to appease mama.. AND, as I said, its kinda nice to be able to go in and grab one.. I just have to figure where to hide a rag to wipe down after each play like I did before putting back in cases.
I love the shelf idea, but no basement or anywhere to put a shelf. ( aside from a shed..) haha
