Cash out for a budget guitar for metal?

I'm so torn right now.

Lately, I've discovered some great new metal acts, Opeth, Mastodon, Gojira, etc. And Bulb-stuff, of course. So now I'd like trying to play a little more metal again (last time around, I was on a huge Metallica kick, years and years ago, and I remember riffing around with the guitar was so fun).

But I'm not sure if I should cash out for a new guitar. I have a Parker Nitefly with a Jazz and a C8, it could do the job, but how far away from, say, Gojira tones, would this be? Can I get in the ballpark, or is it difficult (I think Joe uses a 59' and a JB)?

Also, the guitar is strung up with 9's, but I guess I'd string it up with 52 on the low E and 10 on the high E (a combination set) - I don't think I would go further down than DGCFAD-tuning - Gojira seems to get it heavy enough without going much further down there.

Or should I drop the Parker-idea and get a new axe? If so, which one? I really can't cash out more than 2-300 dollars - and I think that won't be enough, but if you know some treasures, that's cool.

Edit: of course I'm thinking a used new axe, preferably a little nicked so that the resale value is lowered without playability lowered. And it would be used for rhythm. I'm not much of a lead player.

Saw Gojira open for Metallica twice last month. They've slowly grown on me since then. Looked like they play Jackson guitars almost exclusively. Not sure which amps. There are plenty of mid-range Jacksons you could get to help achieve a Gojira-like tone. There are deals to be found.

Couldn't give you any kind of credible advice on the Parker.

What kind of amp are you playing through right now?

I've just bought an AxeFX standard, so I'll be able to sculpt the tone a fair bit. However, that also makes the budget very tight.. ;)

EDIT: by the way, I would so want to be at those concerts!

Re: Cash out for a budget guitar for metal?

Gojira played a nice 30 minute set. That style of vocals are typically not my cup of tea but they had a few unique songs like Oroborus and Vacuity that resonated with me.

Metallica were amazing as always. Lamb of God were also on the bill but I can't get into them or that style of metal. Their set was a nice 45 minute window to become intimately familiar with the fine upstanding ladies working the beer stands.

tor your guitar is fine for metal. don't sell it especially not in this economy.

Re: Cash out for a budget guitar for metal?

You should be able to get a good used japanese Jackson for 200-300$, probably with EMGs already installed. Have a look out especially for the older ones.

10 - 52 a full note step down on all strings might still feel a bit sloppy for you.
Is the Parker a short 24.75 or longer 25.5 board?

Cool. :) Haven't "got" LoG myself.

Oh no, will definitely not sell the Parker. :) But I'm considering getting a cheap axe in addition.

Cheers, I'll look into it. :)

If you want a good tremolo also check out the Kramer Focus line.

They are ESP-made Strat alikes with original Floyd Roses. Even the pickups are half-usable. First class fretwork.

They go < $300.

I think there's a pic somewhere of ImmortalSix's Strat where his feet show...those definitely aren't a cute asian girl's feet!

I forgot to add, I also have size 13 man feet. Again, it just never came up.

Thanks. However, I have no interest in tremolo if I wanted to buy a new guitar.. It'll mostly be used for rhythm. :) Thanks anyway.
