Catching JB Sound

I'm actually fine with my current pickup so pickup change is not really "necessary" at all THO I'm planning to buy a JB anyway. (Sounds ironic xD)

Since I can't find a good clean demo of JB on youtube, it's kinda hard to tell what frequency it is focused on. Planning to emulate it using EQ. And yes, I'm aware of EQ vs new pups. Like I said, I'm fine with my current pup actually.

What I like on JB when it's on dirt is that, it cuts through. I mean, I like that poking/piercing mid that JB has. What mid freq is it? 700? 1000? 2000?

P.S We don't have any shop selling SD pups here, Guitar Center, guitar shops that is equipped with aftermarket pups, etc. We always buy online for SD pups.

Welcome to the forum!

I am not sure of the exact mid frequency the JB tends to push, but I will say that it isn't known for its clean sound. It has a better clean sound split and in parallel, but in normal series...well, there is a reason why you never hear much of it clean. It tends to do one thing really well (and that isn't clean).

Re: Catching JB Sound

I have a few JBs and with my amp I can get pretty good cleans from them. It depends alot on the guitar and amp (my amp is capable of exceptionally gorgeous clean sounds). But I confess that for really pristine cleans from a JB I like it in parallel...significantly reduces the mud that can be introduced by the lows and lower mids, and it reduces the output to lower that front-end punch to your amp.

Google the SD tone chart. It's still there. It has the resonant peak for most SD pickups. While not a "frequency" that you'd find on an EQ, it can offer a reference point to other pickups.

Depending on where you are, most companies have a "JB killer" that might be more accessible to you.

Also, are you trying to say that you want to use EQ in your rig to copy the sound of a different pickup (the JB, in this case)? That sounds like an interesting goal. Please follow up with how it works out for you.

It is always that upper mid thing that sounds like a wah pedal is on that I hear. It is really unbalanced EQ-wise, which works so well with distortion, but hurts me when used clean. I don't mind the split sound, but I haven't tried it in parallel yet.
