In my eternal impatience, I recently swapped the pickups headed for my project Tele into my Schecter C1. The previous pickups were the stock nickel-covered Duncan Designed Distortoin, and the bridge was a black USA Distortion.
I swapped in a nickel-covered Alnico 2 Pro Humbucker in the neck and a Zebra Custom Custom in the bridge. The guitar took on a completely different characteristic. Gone is the thick, dense chugga of the DD, and also gone is the occasional icepickiness.
I bought the CC on a reccomendation Joneser made for someone else, saying CC for bluesy rock, C5 for rock, and Custom for heavy rock. It's an amazing pickup. High output still, but a lot more "open" sounding than the DD. The cleans are a different character, much more midrangey. Under gain, it sounds great for both rhythm and lead.
The Alnico II Pro neck sounds exactly like Jeff H eloquently described - something about honey and hookers.
Very very smooth, thick, warm, etc. Makes the 24-fret neck (misplaces the neck pickup) not really matter. In combination, the pickups are very sweet, very singing, and very clear.
I almost don't want to put these in my Tele when it's done. I might have to buy another set and put them in that. Excellent, excellent pickups.
