CC brighter than a JB?

I just installed a Custom Custom (to try out) in the bridge position of a '91 Gibson SG. This replaced the old 80's JB that was in there.

Tried the guitar out last night at band practice as well as at low volumes here at home.

I am really surprised that the CC seems much brighter and more shrill. I was not expecting that.

Also, there seems to be much more output from the CC (and it distorts more easily). Isn't the JB supposed to be louder?

Everything was and is wired properly.

Thoughts?

Re: CC brighter than a JB?

The CC is anything but shrill. I'd lower the treble on the amp cuz that is not an overly bright pickup and it should not sound shrill at all.

To reduce the treble of the CC lower it a little further from the strings...but I like it best as close as I can get it.

The amp settings are the same amp settings that the JB sounded good at (and that the Jazz neck sounds good at).

The CC has more of a "on the verge of distorting" midrange peak and a brightness on the top end that wasn't there in the JB. I have tried lowering it, raising it, (the guys at band practice were very patient).

:boggled:

Sounds like you need to play with your amp settings some more before forming an opinion. ;)
I haven't tried the CC but I'd say that a JB and a CC both have a very different voice needing different eq.
Just my 2 cents.

Never heard anyone say that before?

The CC mids do give you that edge of breaking up real easy but shrill, never. Me thinks something isn't quite right there. Not sure what though?

Re: CC brighter than a JB?

that is quite strange......i own both pickups(CC & JB)
the jb is surely of a higher output than the CC....maybe something's wrong with your jb...have you checked the wiring?the fact you say that the cc distorts more easily than the jb is due to the large amount of mids it has and that is giving you the impression it distorts more....but it definately has a lower output than the jb.I also find the CC to be less bright than the JB.... :smack: :smack: :smack: :saeek:

Re: CC brighter than a JB?

I would consider the CC to have more of a "presence" than consider it to be bright.

Re: CC brighter than a JB?

Didn't you say the Custom was also brighter than the JB? maybe it is the way your guitar reacts to pickups? Maybe the JB is the one for this guitar?
