CC, C5, C8...what Custom in this guitar

Got an el-cheapo Jackson Rhoads JS32 that is a rock machine. Just love it. Stock pickups are bleh. I bought a Custom Shop set of pickups a few years back from a forum member; a Custom Custom bridge and Alnico II Pro neck, both with double rows of screws and black bobbins. Gold covers and screws, but I like the open humbucker look and tone. This is a basswood body guitar with a Floyd Rose, so which version of the CC would rock best in this guitar? I'd like a heavier sound for this, and I play mostly though a Bad Cat Cougar 50 if that helps. i also have a few different types of magnets to play with too. Thank you everyone.

Don't think I have the ceramic for the Custom. Would the C8 be close enough? I don't know what b9 #11 is for the C7 which means I probably don't have it.

Re: CC, C5, C8...what Custom in this guitar

I would rock that CC first (the CC/Alnico II Pro is my favorite combo). In the mean time order some magnets to have on hand if you decide to change. But what you have is already very cool.

The C8 would also be good. The "b9#11" is someone having a bit of fun; it refers to a chord structure.

Used to love the PGn and Duncan Custom combo for heavier sounds.

Used it in a Strat for a few years until I found my 335 and stopped playing that Strat and eventually sold it.

Anyways, the PGn and Duncan Custom always delivered the goods.

The Custom is brighter and more like a PAF on steroids. It's chunky and handles de tuning well, but it's not middy like the CC or scooped like the C5 or warm and powerful like the C8. The Custom pairs well with a Jazz or a 59, but a Demon will work in pinch.

Re: CC, C5, C8...what Custom in this guitar

Thanks for all the replies! Got a good laugh out of the "C7", thanks Demanic for explaining that, lol. I'm leaning towards the C8 with an unpolished magnet. I have quite a few magnets in A2, A4, A5, A8 regular, roughcast, unpolished. And I DID find a ceramic that has some plastic glued to one side to give it that "air" thing. Other pickups I have on hand (can't quite shell out for new ones) are bridge: Dimarzio Super Distortion, Alnico Pro II, HB-112 (Dominus' review below) Neck: OLD Dimarzio Super 2, Dimarzio Eric Johnson.

Here's Dominus' review from a few years back on the HB-112

FINALLY got around to testing this.

Thrashtastic. It has the growl of the Distortion with the tightness of the Full Shred. I've got it in an Affinity Strat which is a thinner alder bodied guitar, and it's just awesome. May even be better than the Deton8r. I'll really have to play with it some more later.

You should be able to use acetone to get the plastic off the ceramic magnet. Then pop it in and you have a regular Custom.

I'd like to try that, but I got the C8 in and it is faaaaantastic. I changed the pots to CTS and swapped the pickups, then spent an hour trying to find out why I wasn't getting any sound. Turned out to be the braided wire was touching EVERYTHING in the cavity, so I electrical tapes all the connections on the 3 way and the pots and no more problems, hello metal/rock axe. I used to think the stock Jackson pickups were actually pretty good until one day at rehearsal I took this guitar off, plugged in my Les Paul with a Super Distortion and could immediately hear the difference in tonal quality. The C8 has such a tight bottom. Probably the tightest of all the guitar I have, the mids are JUST right, and the highs are present and smooth, not piercing. Was playing my Bad Cat through a Marshall 2X12 with some old T75s and the sound was heaven. Because of the time I couldn't crank it up, but I couldn't put the guitar down for an hour and a half. It screams really easy too. While it is a cheap, mass produced guitar, I gotta say the action beautiful and it sounds great. Just a fun guitar.

Beautiful! Glad it worked out.

There are plenty who love that C8 along with you. It is overall a little 'hard' for me, but I can see why it would be a cool thing for the right music.

Said it before, but I still maintain that the Crazy 8 blows away putting an Alnico 8 in a production Custom.

Probably, but if you already have the Custom and the A8 magnet, and it gets close, it's a much less expensive solution.

When I see people describing what they are hearing a Custom with an Alnico 8, it's nearly always a description of the Crazy 8. Plus, the Crazy 8 isn't as overly saturated as the alternative.

Re: CC, C5, C8...what Custom in this guitar

True, but isn't the Crazy 8 a Custom shop pickup? Not a bad idea if you are starting from scratch and planning on buying one new. But if you already have the Custom pickup and spare magnets around, the Custom 8 is much less expensive.

Re: CC, C5, C8...what Custom in this guitar

That was exactly my situation. I'd love to try a Crazy 8, especially now, but I'm not in a situation where I can spend money, and I had all the parts. I'm also now going to rip the C5 out of the Jesuscaster, put my last unpolished A8 in that and try it in my Agile Hawker with the Floyd. Also a stock pickup guitar. I'll probably use the Dimarizo Super 2 in the neck. I used the Jackson at rehearsal yesterday and after we played our first song, they all said this is the best sounding guitar I have. I don't know how far I would go with that since I still love how my Les Paul and Chibson SG sound with the Brobuckers, but it sounds incredible plus it is without a doubt the loudest guitar at the moment. Had to turn the amp up two notches when I strapped on a Super Distortion loaded axe. When a $200 el cheapo guitar gets put in the same class with a Les Paul for tone, you know you've got a great pickup combo in it. Plus they're double black bobbins with gold screws, and we all know black bobbins sound the best, right?

some people think that playing guitar is the wrong hobby to be a tightwad. :D

even more so for the tone-chasers.

Re: CC, C5, C8...what Custom in this guitar

Yes, but there's no virtue in being a spendthrift.
